5 Retro Trends Sabrina Carpenter Can't Stop Wearing

Although we're living in 2024, every time you see a photo or performance of Sabrina Carpenter, she looks as though she was plucked right out of the 1950s. Whether it's her video for her song "Espresso" or when she's out on the town with friends, Carpenter has made herself the queen of retro trends. She's mastered the look of old Hollywood and her fans can't get enough of it. And what's cool about the pieces she's rocking is that this style evolution really started to flourish with the kickoff of her Short N' Sweet tour.

"The things I feel really confident in now, maybe five years ago I probably would have never worn [them], but that's the beautiful thing about evolving with fashion," Carpenter tells Who What Wear. "I'm constantly exploring and figuring [things] out." While Carpenter figures things out, it's a fun evolution to watch and be inspired by, because no matter what retro 'fit she rocks, she always 100% nails it which makes her even more irresistible to watch.

Thigh high stockings

Sabrina Carpenter wears a lot of thigh highs, both on and off the stage. This type of stocking goes way back to the era before the invention of pantyhose and were worn with or without garters to keep them up. It's a super old-school article of clothing that was huge during the pin-up girl era of the 1940s and 1950s. The fishnets, in particular, are an extra nod to those decades of yore. It's a look that's equal parts sexy and sassy — just like a pin-up.

Head scarves

As great as head scarves are as an accessory, they also serve a purpose: to keep perfectly coiffed hair from getting messed up from the weather. New York City socialite Baby Paley was known to never leave the house without a scarf, and you'd be hard-pressed to find an Audrey Hepburn film where she doesn't wear a scarf at some point. It's the ultimate must-have piece for anyone who not only wants to embrace timeless sophistication, but wants to look like Sabrina Carpenter in the process.

Go-go boots

When Sabrina Carpenter is performing, she wears go-go boots quite often and most of the time they're white — a blast from the past! Although the majority of her wardrobe is straight out of the 1950s, the go-go boots are more of a mid-1960s look. While go-go boots were a staple amongst women in the 1960s, with singers like Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas wearing them when the band performed, it was Nancy Sinatra's 1966 song, "These Boots Are Made for Walking," that made everyone and their mom want to get themselves their own pair of go-go boots.

Platform peep-toe shoes

Jumping back to the 1950s again, Sabrina Carpenter's shoe of choice seems to be platform shoes with a peep-toe. This type of shoe first came about in the 1940s and while it never officially went out of style, it's definitely seen a resurgence — which some attribute to Victoria Beckham. While there have definitely been several incarnations of this iconic shoe, Carpenter sticks to the classic version, which has the 1950s written all over them.

Her Hollywood lob

While her hair may not be an article of clothing, it's something very retro that Sabrina Carpenter can't stop wearing — at least at the moment. Although her hair has always had more of a retro feel to it than her contemporaries, she went all in when she debuted her new 'do at the 2024 Video Music Awards. The cut in luminescent blonde was very Marilyn Monroe, and her dress choice added to the whole look.
