The Accessory Trends That Are Totally Outdated In 2024

While you're never under any obligation to follow fashion trends, there's still a decent chance that you'd like to avoid the outdated trends of the moment. Granted, one's style shouldn't be dictated by the industry, but if you're a sucker for what's hot right now, then it's hard to ignore what your wardrobe needs to stay up to date — even down to accessory choices.

As many trends that 2024 has brought with it, we're still seeing a lot of last year lingering — which can be a great thing for your wallet. "I think if prices for luxury goods continue to remain as high as they currently are, we'll see the 'quiet luxury' trend stick around for a bit longer," fashion writer Emilia Petrarca told Glamour. "It's just too expensive to take risks on pieces that you might not like five, 10 years down the line. Timeless pieces are perhaps a better investment."

But just because quiet luxury is still here doesn't mean you can't have fun with your wardrobe. To make sure your accessories are still in style, then here are the outdated pieces you need to avoid.

Box up your big logo bags

Bags with big logos have always appealed to people who want to show off that they can afford a certain designer. While that's all well and good, and a tactic that some people — those who need to prove something — will continue to do, it's a totally outdated trend. In fact, it's never really been an "in" trend, but as long as quiet luxury and old-money aesthetics are en vogue, bags that advertise a designer's name are out.

Break up with your stilettos

Because 2024 is still riding that quiet luxury wave and placing its bets on simplicity, similar to bags with logos, super high heels are completely over in 2024 too. Instead, low heels, like court shoes, and even sneakers are what you should be turning to if you want to avoid the most outdated shoe trends this year.

Ditch the wide-brimmed hats

As timeless sophistication is having a resurgence, mostly in part due to Ryan Murphy's latest installment of "Feud," entitled "Capote Vs. The Swans," it's time for small hats to have their moment again — notably the pillbox hat. While wide-brimmed hats will always have their place, for example, on a hot summer's day at the beach or if you're on safari in the Serengeti, when it comes to sticking to the fashionable trends of 2024, it doesn't belong. So ditch those for now.

Lose the chain belts

As the fashionistas of the world descended upon Fall 2024 Fashion Week earlier this year, one thing was very clear: we're in the season of the leather belt. Thin or wide, wrapped once around the waist or a few times, it simply doesn't matter because, according to Vogue the belt is the "it" accessory for 2024. In other words, chain belts are over but that doesn't mean you can't find another way to wear them — perhaps as a necklace.

Skip the busy patterns

If you haven't noticed a theme in these outdated trends, then let's just point it out for you: busy, bold, and loud is out; neutral, quiet, and sophisticated is in. Although there will always be a situation that calls for a busy pattern (a carnival maybe?), for the most part, if you want to be in style, you should skip them as much as possible.

Forget the subtle sunglasses

Once the Jackie O. trend of sunglasses ran its course, small, narrow, and oval became all the rage. But, true to form, the latter is no longer in style and must be forgotten. Instead, big sunglasses with mirrored lenses that make you feel like you, too, have the paparazzi to hide from is the way to go. Sunglasses are actually the only accessory in this list that breaks away from the quiet luxury trend but, hey, you need to make some noise somehow.
