The Feather Cut Is The Breeziest Hair Trend For Summer 2024

Although the feathered cut has been around since the 1970s, it was Farah Fawcett who made it iconic. So much so, that even those of us who weren't around in that era can't hear the words "feathered hair" without associating it with Fawcett. Over the years, feathered cuts have evolved and different versions have become popular. "The Rachel," after all, with its multiple layers, was just another take on feathering and that cut, too, had thousands of people running to the hair salon to get it.

"[The feathered cut is] designed to add volume and bounce one's hair, and is very similar to a shag cut, but with more of a uniform finish," celebrity hairstylist, Castillo, told InStyle. "It's such a vibe — the wind blows through your layers and weightless ends to mimic the strands in a bird's feathers."

Because the feather cut is back — not that it ever really went away — you may want to give it a try this summer. It's the type of cut that easily works with all hair types, meaning anyone can pull it off and look both chic and low-key cool at the same time.

Go for a lob with bangs

One of the best cuts out there is the lob. With a length that's not too long, but certainly not short, the lob is perfect for those who just want to dip their toe into short hair. While it looks great on curly and pin-straight hair, giving it volume with a feather cut will make it feel extra bouncy and light — something that your head and the rest of your body will appreciate on hot, humid days.

Keep it long and old school

Because the feathered cut is so iconic, you can stick with the parameters of Farah Fawcett's hair and still be completely in style. It's also a great way to breathe new life into long hair because the layers lighten the load, so to speak, creating shape, volume, and texture. No longer will your long 'do look tired and heavy, if you have a stylist feather it up.

Experiment with untraditional colors

While they may be once something that was only associated with punks or your favorite eccentric aunt, unconventional hair colors have become increasingly popular and nestled into the mainstream. They're also oh-so fun. If you're looking to really change your look, then go all out. A feathered cut that's rocking a color like pink, blue, green, or purple is an easy way to do that.

Feather cut your curls

A curly feather cut? You bet your bottom dollar! "The good thing about feathered hair is that it can work on any hair type — from straight to curly, short to long — as long as the cut has finely textured layered styles," hairstylist, Stephen Buller, told Refinery 29. "It's all about how you detail the layers too: it can create volume for finer hair types but also lighten the heavier and thicker hair types." A curly feather cut can easily be paired with curtain bangs; these two looks were made for each other.

Rock a feathered bob

Anyone who's ever had a bob will tell you it's not just an "It" look that endures, but they're so easy to maintain. Although a classic bob always works, adding feathery layers is a perfect way to frame the face. Face-framing cuts accentuate your facial features, so even on days when you don't want to put in the time for a full face of makeup, you'll still stand out in the crowd.
