Fall 2024 Hair Styling Trends You'll Want To Try

We might still be fighting off the heat and humidity of summer 2024, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look to the fall and the hairstyling trends that will be coming our way. According to the hair trends that appeared at the Fall/Winter '24 runway shows earlier this year, hairstyles are going to run the gamut this fall and we couldn't be more excited. From decorative hair and souped-up buns to reverting to the old-school side part, to using hair as a canvas on which to build magnificent art, there will be no shortage of styles to choose from as the temperatures begin to drop.

Because some of these styles may need a few rounds of practice to achieve them, there's no time like the present to start learning how to braid, blow out your locks, or apply hair tattoos. With sequins being in for 2024, it only makes sense that the hairstyle trends for the latter half of the year be just as glamorous and eye-catching.

Go big for an afternoon at the museum

If you have naturally big, voluminous hair that you try to tame daily, then you're in luck because this fall, the motto is the bigger the better. As spotted at the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2024 runway shows, big hair is, well, bigger than ever. It's fun, it's dramatic, and even conjures up some mob wife aesthetics. It's definitely a hairstyle trend you want to get in on because it can be both a casual and sophisticated look, depending on the outfit and energy you pair with it.

Rock a decorative bun for Thanksgiving dinner

Although once reserved ballerinas and brides, decorative buns are going to be everywhere this fall so you might as well jump on the bandwagon. While the messy bun look isn't going anywhere — lazy people rejoice! — giving traditional buns a little something extra is where it's at right now. As Christian Siriano proved with his Fall/Winter '24 show, there's no wrong way to embellish a bun, so let yourself get creative with pearls, colorful decorations, sparkles, or even just a pencil or two that will kick your bun up a notch.

Try the sleek look for a day trip to a winery with friends

While there were quite a few wet hairstyles on the Fall/Winter 2024 runway shows, one of the looks that wasn't quite wet, but just as slick were the sleek hairstyles. Whether brushed straight back or to the side, sleek styled hair immediately elevates your look. It's super polished and with the right blush, for example, the sunset blush trend, it's the perfect way to hit up a winery with your besties.

Put your hair in intricate braids for an afternoon picking apples

Not that fans of braids needed some sort of permission to wear them, but braids are absolutely going to be the "it" style of the fall. And, the more intricate, the better. "In today's culture, braids are adorned, worn, and praised in many different ways," celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims told Brydie. "Men and women who wouldn't have worn them previously now embrace them. Women are approaching the braiding style in different ways. From clean lines to braids that are organic and messy. Women are taking on a fresh approach to coolness." In other words, if you don't know how to braid, then now is the time to learn because this ultra-chic look is one you'll want all fall and into the winter.

Turn your hair into art for a night out on the town

Of all the hairstyles that graced the Fall/Winter '24 runways, it was decorative hair that was by far the most fun. From hair tattoos to elaborate embellishments, designers really shook things up with decorative hair. Although it might be easy to dismiss this type of styling as only appropriate for Halloween or themed events, that's not true. Any day or night, and any plan is reason enough to grab some hair paint, over-the-top accessories, and have some crazy fun with this look.

Pull off the side part look while sipping your pumpkin spice latte

While Gen Z may be pushing their middle part agenda, those of us who have been around a bit longer know that side parts, especially deep side parts, are all the rage. According to the Fall/Winter '24 runways of Tory Burch, Prada, and others, designers know it's the best part there is. Side parts work for all types of hair, all face shapes, and complement facial features — unlike middle parts.

"Middle parts are much less forgiving," hairstylist Justine Marjan told Allure. "Something super-centered can make imperfections and asymmetries more apparent than a side part — and most of us do not have perfectly symmetrical features." Basically, as you prepare for pumpkin latte season, it's time to embrace the deep side part — no matter what Gen Z might be trying to sell on TikTok.
