How To Nail Jennifer Lopez's Unique Take On A Classic French Manicure
Despite all the noise and rumors circling about her personal life, Jennifer Lopez never misses the opportunity to make a fashion statement. Whether it means showing up to an event in a show-stopping outfit or keeping things cool and casual on the streets of L.A. and New York, Lopez knows the paparazzi are always watching her, so she's always going to serve.
Earlier this year Lopez was spotted rocking really unique nails. At first glance, it looked like a reverse French manicure, but closer inspection proved that it was something else, something that may not even have a name yet. Instead of just a white cuticle and colorful nail, the tips of Lopez's nails were also white, creating a reverse French manicure-meets-classic French manicure look. Needless to say, it looked fantastic and, in the same vein as Carrie Bradshaw, we couldn't help but wonder how Lopez, or rather her manicurist, created such a vision. So you don't have to, we did some digging and found out how you, too, can nail Lopez's take on the classic French manicure.
Choose your length and shape
Although Lopez's nails are long and almond, if this isn't a fit for you and your style, then you do you, as they say. "Trying out different nail shapes definitely keeps things fun, and it's a great way to express ourselves," nail technician Lilly Rojas told Allure. "Just like experimenting with colors you normally wouldn't wear feels brave, finding your perfect nail shape can provide a sense of self-confidence and empowerment." While the most common shapes are round, square, oval, and almond, don't be afraid to try squoval, coffin, or stiletto.
Pick your favorite mani color of the moment
So far this year, we've been inundated with a whole universe of the trendiest nail colors which, let's be honest, can make deciding on just one color pretty difficult. That being said, if you can't commit to just one base color, you can alternate or do each finger a different color. After all, we're trying to nail J.Lo's take on the French manicure, not completely duplicate it. In other words, let yourself get creative.
Get to painting
With your chosen color (or colors) in hand, start painting your nails while leaving the tips bare. Like the cuticles, you'll be filling in the tips later, so just focus on a couple applications of the base color. Granted, if you don't have a steady hand, avoiding the tips in a smooth, flawless way may be tricky, so relying on a friend to help or using those nail stickers that come in French manicure kits is going to be your best bet.
Let your nails completely dry
The easiest part of this manicure is when you've finished painting the color and all you have to do is wait for your nails to dry. Depending on what kind of polish you use, this could be a matter of a minute or two, or longer. Either way, you can take this time to contemplate life and maybe even journal your feelings. It goes without saying that the health benefits of journaling are astounding, and there's nothing more rewarding than multi-tasking.
Paint half-moons at the base of every nail and fill in the tips
If you thought trying to keep your tips bare was a task and a half, now you need to paint half-moons (aka half circles) where your cuticles naturally are. Again, if you're not super comfortable with painting this particular shape in a way that doesn't destroy all your hard work so far, you'll want to call a friend to help. When the cuticle step is completed, you can either fill in the tips with the same color (Lopez has done white, but you can spice things up) or leave them bare.
Once you're satisfied with the look of your nails, you can wrap things up with a top coat. Now all you need is to marry a person with a penchant for Dunkin' Donuts and you haven't just nailed J.Lo's mani, but become her doppelganger. Bravo!
