5 Outdated Trends We've Spotted On Brittany Mahomes

Getting caught in outdated fashion trends is sometimes unavoidable. We've all put together outfits that do not stand the test of time, and look back with a shudder. For the average person, these hilarious moments are relegated to family photo albums and deep-dives on Facebook. For celebrities like Brittany Mahomes, though, it's a little more publicly accessible. Former soccer player and wife of NFL star Patrick Mahomes, Brittany has been a figure of interest for years now, which means that we've enjoyed a thorough arc of her fashion sensibility.

For one, we know that she loves athletic leisure. We also know that she's got a soft spot for the glam life, and isn't afraid to get dolled up every now and then. We also know that she's sported a few looks that, by today's standards, might be a tad outdated. Hey, who hasn't? Even her fellow NFL pal Taylor Swift has been spotted wearing looks that felt passé. So in the spirit of having a smile at fashion from the past, with a twinge of nostalgia and memories of our own fashion mistakes, we're checking out some of Brittany's misses while celebrating the amazing style that she has today.

Brittany Mahomes sported shredded denim

In May 2020, as the pandemic was wreaking havoc, Brittany Mahomes took to Instagram to talk about what we were all thinking: Will we ever wear anything but sweats again? She asked her followers if they were going out in public yet, or still staying indoors, and shared that she took advantage of a rare opportunity to dress up. While the fitness instructor can arguably pull off most everything, the shreded denim seemed like an odd choice.  Since 2018, trending denim has placed an emphasis on clean cuts without distress or rips. Frayed hems and destroyed detailing are part of 2024's most outdated denim trends. However, to be fair, some fans were into Mahomes' jeans, and made mention of this in the comments. "Where did you get these jeans omg!!!" one fan asked. "Cute jeans, what brand are they?" another inquired. Clearly, denim is versatile enough to offer something for everyone, and that's a great thing.

The leopard print bellbottoms seemed like they were made for a costume party

Brittany Mahomes proved that she had a flair for vintage fashion in January 2020 when she posted a pair of statement, leopard print bellbottoms. She completed the '60s-inspired look with a wide-brimmed hat and bold, red shoes.

It was certainly an eye-catching look, and one that was out of the ordinary for Mahomes. The loud printed jeans paired and fitted, off-the-shoulder sweater seemed like something straight out of a decades old fashion catalogue or a movie set in the late 1960s. However, it's not far off to say Mahomes was actually ahead of her time with this look. Vintage-inspired jeans, such as wide leg and bellbottom cuts have made a major comeback in 2024, alongside the return of retro hair accessories, like headbands. Whatever the case, we're sure Mahomes had fun wearing the vintage-inspired fit. Some fans on Instagram appreciated the throwback vibe. "Love this. Looks vintage 60's. Thanks for wearing. Reminds me of how much fun we had," a follower wrote on Instagram.

Brittany Mahomes can't quit skinny jeans

Everyone has heard it a million times at this point: Skinny jeans are out of style. Nevertheless, so many of us can't seem to toss this particular cut of denim, and Brittany Mahomes is included in the bunch. In November 2019, our girl shared a photo to Instagram of herself striking a pose at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee with skin-tight, distressed skinny jeans as the foundational piece. She also sported a gold, bomber jacket, aviators, and patent red booties. Of course, we'd have to forgive Mahomes for wearing these past their shelf life. Per NPR, skinny jeans were already on their way out by 2018, but it wasn't until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 that looser styles became the go-to denim look.

Mahomes isn't the only celebrity who will not shelve her skinny jeans. Catherine, Princess of Wales, has famously and stubbornly refused to toss the tight pants, and frequently wears them on her down days. So if British royalty and NFL royalty alike are insisting that skinny jeans are fashionable, who are we to argue?

We're getting major nostalgia for the thigh high boot and flare sleeve dress

One of the hallmarks of the mid-2010s style were super tall, slouchy boots. This particular design of boots became the staple party footwear by 2015. Though people paired them with pretty much everything, one of the most popular outfit formulas of the day consisted of either a super short babydoll dress or a fit and flare frock. Mahomes was no stranger to the latter. In one photo celebrating Valentine's Day 2018 with Patrick Mahomes, the star can be seen sporting a form-fitting, eggplant purple dress with flare sleeves and over-the-knee, grey boots. Of course, tall boots eventually made a comeback in 2023, but the favored style now consists of structured leather with long, fitted silhouettes.

The fringe gladiator sandals were very 2010s

The gladiator style of sandal was a huge part of the sartorial zeitgeist in the 2010s, showing up on red carpets and music festivals. The sandals were busy, fun, and offered sway and movement when you walked. One snap from Brittany Mahomes' Instagram in 2016 reveals she was clearly on board with the trend, as she stood alongside husband Patrick Mahomes in black, strappy flats with fringe extending down to her exposed toes. Although the maximalist shoe feels like a blast from the past in a post 2019 world (where our sandals are now sleeker and minimalist), this doesn't mean that the heavily-tasseled gladiator didn't have its moment in history. A glance at Brittany's 2024 Instagram posts shows that she's well aware of current trends in footwear, but she certainly partook in these festival-inspired sandals back when they were hot!
