5 Celebs Who Have Been Vocal About Avoiding Plastic Surgery
If there's one thing we can count on Hollywood to deliver continuously, it's unrealistic beauty standards. We're living in a culture where people like the Kardashians have set the standard for what's supposed to be beautiful and to get there requires not just a few tweaks, but going under the knife. Plastic surgery — the really intense procedures like Brazilian butt lifts and tummy tucks — have become so common that according to a 2023 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, all plastic surgery procedures saw a jump between 2022 and 2023, with facelifts seeing one of the biggest increases at 8%.
Although some non-invasive treatments, like Botox, offer health benefits, for the most part, these procedures and treatments are meant to do only one thing: stop the hands of time. But not everyone is buying into this new normal. Instead, some people are embracing their wrinkles and laugh lines for what they are: the privilege of growing older. Even some celebrities, despite the pressure they get in their industry to look young forever, are saying no to plastic surgery and sharing their reasons why.
What you do to your body is your business, but there are many things to consider before getting plastic surgery. Make sure you do your research and maybe look at the celebrities you admire who are confronting aging with confidence and embracing their youthful imperfections. Some surgeries are permanent, and regret is a heavy burden to bear.
Paulina Porizkova
As a former model, Paulina Porizkova knows a lot is riding on one's looks, but even though she's now 59, she won't be getting plastic surgery anytime soon. In an Instagram post from July 2021, Porizkova posted a photo of herself in a bikini on Instagram with a caption that read, "Combat age. Reverse aging. Rejuvenate. Anti-age. None of this is possible. Yet, if you do an internet search on aging, this is what you'll get. Pills, potions, and workouts to fight the aging process. You know what the only way to stop aging? Dying." Porizkova also pointed out that it's the women on Instagram who dare to age and accept their elder years that she finds inspiring.
In October 2023, Porizkova talked to People about aging in a time of filters and the responsibility of being real in a world that seems anything but that. "As soon as you start filtering yourself or auto-tuning your photos and stuff, well then, it's not really all that authentic anymore," Porizkova said. "I feel a responsibility to put myself out there as I am. Why do I need improvement? I'm in my prime right now. I'm sorry that you think my wrinkles dismiss me from being in my prime, but as a person, as a fully formed woman at the height of her power, this is it."
Sandra Oh
Sandra Oh isn't just talented and beautiful, but she's the type of person pretty much everyone wants to be friends with because she's that damn cool. So when Oh told Vulture in 2018 that when she got to Hollywood she was told she needed to get plastic surgery, it was shocking. "It was the way that she said, 'Listen: I'm not going to lie to you. A lot of people are going to lie to you. But I've got nothing for you here. I have Suzy Kim' — I'm just making up names — 'she has an audition in like six months. There's nothing for a year,'" said Oh. "'My best advice for you is to go back home and get famous.'" Oh didn't take the woman's advice. Instead, she didn't get surgery and stayed put — and thank heavens she did so we could reap the benefits of her decision.
While on the red carpet in September 2024 for her new film, "Can I Get A Witness," an interviewer from E-Talk asked Oh how it is that she hadn't aged in 30 years. After happily laughing at the comment, Oh said, "I feel better now and I feel I look better now." Absolutely.
Drew Barrymore
In February 2025, Drew Barrymore will reach the milestone of turning 50. As someone who grew up in the limelight with the world watching her not only age, but also struggle with addiction, Barrymore is pretty used to being scrutinized by strangers. This might just be the reason why she's opted out of plastic surgery and has no plans to opt in at some point in the future either.
"I haven't done anything, and I'm going to maintain that as long as possible," Barrymore told People in November 2023. "I have zero judgment for anyone doing anything. But I don't see myself resorting to it ... And, I look forward to seeing what I look like as a leather bag in the future!" Barrymore also added that she feared she might get carried away and go overboard with plastic surgery if she were to start doing it. "I have a highly addictive personality, so I worry I'd continue to chase it, get this and that done," she said. "That scares me, just because of my own approach to things. So, I'm waiting on making any alterations."
Halle Berry
At 58, Halle Berry isn't just embracing her age, but celebrating her sexuality and being super candid in the process. In a society that prefers that women stay young and perfect forever, Berry has been outspoken about perimenopause and menopause, going so far as to launch a wellness brand, RESPIN, that focuses on empowering women as they get older. But even before she reached menopause age, Berry knew that plastic surgery wasn't in the cards for her and she was determined to keep the face she was born with.
"I won't lie and tell you that those things don't cross my mind, because somebody is always suggesting it to me ... It's almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That's what I feel like," Berry told Yahoo Life in 2015 about plastic surgery. "I just have kept reminding myself that beauty really is as beauty does, and it is not so much about my physical self. Aging is natural, and that's going to happen to all of us ... I just want to always look like myself, even if that's an older version of myself. I think when you do too much of that cosmetic stuff, you become somebody else in a way."
Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek is the very definition of flawless. All you need is a short spin on her Instagram to know that the woman is funny, endearing, is a big fan of bikinis — and looks amazing in every one of them. Hayek is also a fan of skipping plastic surgery, even non-invasive procedures like Botox, because she's a firm believer that aging can be just as beautiful as youth.
"I don't believe in Botox because your face doesn't move, and it's something you have to do for the rest of your life, more and more every time," Hayek told DuJour in 2016. "I don't look at things short term; I think of longevity. Listen, if there was something you could do that would keep you looking good, I would do it. But I'm in love with my husband, and I want to look like a lovely lady when I'm 70. I want him to see me and think, 'Okay, my girl is old now, but there's still beauty there.'" Hayek's husband is French businessman (and billionaire) François-Henri Pinault — and he'll definitely have a lovely lady to admire when Hayek reaches 70.
