Outdated Beauty Trends To Leave In 2024

Beauty trends are always changing, and what was hot in 2024 has shifted, making space for the newest hair and makeup trends of 2025. Fads like matte lips are no longer the dream style, and slicked-back hair is getting bumped down, to be replaced by full, voluminous waves. So if the coveted hydro hair trend of 2024 was a big thing for you, it might be time to consider new ways of styling your hair.

Even skin care routines are getting revamped with evolving trends. In 2025, we're investing in products that do many things at once, making skincare routines more effective as they demand fewer steps. We already knew that skinimalism simplified our routines, but we're fully committing to that ease in the new year.

Staying on top of beauty trends gives you a chance to experiment with something new and be a part of the glamorous zeitgeist. Looking at what's hot can be inspirational if you're looking for a change, or just a fun way of staying on the pulse of the vibrant, lively world of beauty. We have no interest in shaming anyone who wants to stick to something they like, so if you know what works for your skin and what suits your hair and face, feel free to keep at it! But if you want to add some spice to 2025, we spoke with red carpet hair and makeup artist Luna Viola to get the scoop on what's out and what's trending.

Matte neutral lipstick has been dethroned

For 2025, we're shelving our matte lipsticks. While the velvety textures dominated makeup markets in 2024, they're not going to be as popular in the new year. There's good reason for this: matte lipsticks run the risk of making lips look dry. As cooler, winter months dehydrate lips, matte products can be a real nightmare, as the lipsticks tend to amplify the appearance of flaky skin and peeling lips. To mitigate this, matte lip products require significant prep time before application, demanding more work and products.

The nude tones that were so popular in matte lipsticks are also not likely to be seen in 2025. The drying, neutral colors run the risk of washing out the face and draining it of a healthy, flushed glow. "Matte natural lips will be replaced by the ongoing hydrating trend with glossy and berries or vampy shades," Viola exclusively told Women. High shine and moisture is the name of the game in 2025. The emphasis is on dewy, shiny lips that look well hydrated and amplify the fresh flush of healthy skin.

No one has the time for a 12-step skincare routine

Skin care routines have gotten out of hand. For a time, many skin care brands were touting epic regimes with 10 to 12 products. Not only did it get prohibitively expensive, it also ran the risk of being unhealthy for the skin. Too many active ingredients can actually irritate and dry out skin, rather than nourish it. Viola explained to Women that in 2025, the skin care trend will be all about efficiency and productivity, thanks to fewer, more multi-tasking items. "With the surge of LED masks and face tapes, the standard 12-step skin care routine is definitely being updated with a faster and more revolutionary trend," Viola told us.

LED light therapy face masks have exploded in the skin care world, thanks to their ability to improve the tone and texture of skin. They can also address wrinkles and signs of aging, as well as redness and acne concerns. Masks like the Dr. Dennis Gross LED Face Mask for $455 are pioneering this trend. Face tape is another trend that's become popular for reducing wrinkles and sculpting the face. The trick is to apply face tape to targeted areas, like the forehead or the nose area before bed, to prevent wrinkling during the night. Something as simple as a skin-safe medical tape can do the trick.

Wet, slicked-back hair has run its course

We're sorry for everyone who loved the hydro hair trend, but this straight, slicked-back style is out for 2025. There was an uptick in wet hairdos in 2024, with celebs and street-style aficionados rocking a wet look to give that cool, just-out-of-the-shower energy. The style required a ton of products, from hair gels to hair masks, that were slathered from scalp to ends in order to keep hair looking damp and hydrated. The final effect was certainly edgy, but there was a huge loss in volume, as the hair remained glued down and unmovable thanks to the array of products.

"The new trends for 2025 are all about sexy layers and bouncy hair, and dead straight sleek back hairstyles will look outdated among an ocean of movement," Viola exclusively told Women. The new wave is all about big volume. We're after tricks to get bouncy curls to hold their curve, and are eager to try all the hair hacks that promise to bring more volume. Bigger is better in 2025.

Shimmer is in for 2025!

With matte makeup products on the back burner for 2025, Viola informed Women that shine is going to be the biggest makeup trend in 2025. The focus on skin health means that we're after simple, natural looking skin that's healthy and uncomplicated. While this is great, everyone needs a little sparkle in their life.

"Shimmer will be a huge makeup trend in 2025," Viola exclusively told Women. "After an era of skin focus trends and neutral colors, makeup is back with high shine and sparkle to add extra flair, and having fun with makeup again as a way to amplify your eye look." So dip into metallic cream eyeshadows for a long-lasting base on your lids. Look for lustrous, shimmer bricks to highlight brow bones and the inner corners of the eyes. Have some fun with glittery, liquid eyeshadows to add a pop of sparkle to the lids.

2025 is all about '90s Hollywood glamour, including the bob

What's not going anywhere in 2025 is our love of '90s Hollywood glamour. This is great news for everyone who's grown attached to vinyl lips, dark winged liner, plum tone lip liners, and everything else the decade had to offer. "90's beauty is here to stay with a Hollywood glamour twist," Viola exclusively told Women. "This can be a bold eye with a wing liner like Lana Del Rey or a Pamela Anderson soft updo for a timeless chic look."

Overall, it's pretty clear that 2025 is all about big, bold looks. Viola predicted that the ultimate hairstyle for 2025 will be the voluminous bob. "In all shapes or forms, curled or soft and bouncy, Italian style jaw length or mid length layered with curtain bangs, the bob will be the most popular style next year," she told Women.

For lovers of shorter length, this is wonderful news. Seek out a cut that has layers to amplify movement. Create gravity at the roots by using a mousse, like the Amika's Perfect Body Mousse, or a root spray, such as Living Proof's Full Volume & Root-Lifting Spray. Getting a little assistance from products can help in achieving that bouffant style with lively movement.
