In the world of pop singers, Miley Cyrus remains a standout figure. Unlike some celebrities who prefer to play by the rules and put on a façade — for example, Taylor Swift — Cyrus has always done things her way and often with a beautifully defiant middle finger in the air. Just when you think you know Cyrus, her style, and her music, she does a 180 and surprises everyone.

Although Cyrus has certainly worn some amazing, Bangerz-level outfits, some have been more iconic than others. And it's those that are worth noting, all while fully knowing that Cyrus will outdo herself again and again in her fashion choices. 

In 2013, Miley Cyrus showed up to the Maxim 2013 Hot 100 Party in Hollywood rocking this fantastic strapless jumpsuit. It was a simple, yet sexy look, and completely fitting for the fact that she was crowned Maxim's hottest woman of the year. In 2012, she'd been number 68. Although it's hard to imagine that Cyrus would take something like this seriously, being the hardcore feminist she is. "I feel like I'm one of the biggest feminists in the world because I tell women to not be scared of anything," Cyrus told Newsbeat in 2013, per BBC News. 

When it comes to the Met Gala, you can always bet on Miley Cyrus to show up and serve. For the "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2013, Cyrus arrived in a fishnet gown by Marc Jacobs. She complemented the full-length dress with big jewelry, a makeup look that featured a bold pop of red, and, of course, spikey hair, for that extra "punk" look.

Another place where Miley Cyrus always shines is at the MTV Video Music Awards — even when she's not making people clutch their pearls with her performances. Although she would wear a series of fun and jaw-dropping outfits over the course of the night, Cyrus arrived to the 2015 VMAs in this silver get-up by Atelier Versace. From her hair extensions all the way down to the thigh-high silver boots with gold heels, Cyrus looked completely intergalactic in all the best ways.

For most Met Galas, Miley Cyrus attends them alone. But in 2019, she had an on-again, off-again relationship with partner Liam Hemsworth, who joined the musician for the event that year. "[The Met] is like a reunion of all your friends and it starts feeling like family," Cyrus told Vogue in 2019. "I've always been here solo so I wore higher heels because I have someone to hold me this time."

Cyrus nailed the theme of the night, "Camp: Notes on Fashion," in a black and green mini-dress by Saint Laurent. The platform shoes, also by Saint Laurent, were the first vegan shoes they'd ever created.

By the time 2020 rolled around, Miley Cyrus was in her mullet era — a fun, short-haired trend that some devotees are still rocking. So when Cyrus arrived at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards — just a couple months after the world was in total lockdown — with her platinum mullet and full-length sheer black Mugler dress with mirror-like embellishments, she was a sight for sore eyes. Granted, that VMAs that night was unlike any before or since, due to the pandemic, but Cyrus made the best of it and performed her latest song, "Midnight Sky," which she wrote during lockdown.

In August 2020, Cyrus talked to Apple Music, per Elle, about how important it was for her to write and perform that particular song. "Especially in this time, I think all of us are evolving at a speed... I think all of us are just feeling like we're expanding. We are declaring what we find acceptable and not, where our morals and our values lie. That was really important for me with this record, because talking about 'Midnight Sky,' specifically, I felt like my story and my narrative had kind of been told for me over the past year," said Cyrus in regards to her divorce from Liam Hemsworth.

Although there were plenty of award winners during the 66^th Grammy Awards in February 2024, the night really belonged to Miley Cyrus. After all her years in the industry and numerous accolades she'd garnered, she finally scored not one, but two Grammys that night. Cyrus won Record of the Year for "Flowers" off her 2023 album "Endless Summer Vacation," and Best Pop Solo Performance for the same song.

As she has for past events of this caliber, Cyrus wore more than one stunning outfit that night. When she arrived and hit the red carpet, she wore a custom dress by Maison Margiela that was made of 14,000 gold safety pins. The look was somewhere between Princess Leia and a 21^st century Cleopatra.

That same night, when she won the award for Best Pop Solo Performance — her first ever Grammy and first of two that night — Miley Cyrus wore a halter sparkly jumpsuit by Tom Ford. Cyrus was given the Grammy by Mariah Carey, over whom Cyrus adorably gushed.

"I'm gonna stand by this MC for this because this is just too iconic," said Cyrus. "Oh my God, I just got stuck in the rain and traffic and thought I was gonna miss this moment, and I could have missed the award. That's fine but not Mariah Carey. I just saw you at the Hollywood Bowl. It was everything I got sat in my lucky number three seat." Cyrus also went on to tell a story about a little boy surrendering to catch a butterfly and how her song "Flowers" is her butterfly.
