5 Celebs Who Expertly Clapped Back At Body Shaming Haters
Being a celebrity is a high-profile job, and of course, as a public figure, A-listers are going to be subject to people's opinions. Unfortunately, people usually don't have the nicest things to say. Many are quick to scrutinize celebrities for everything and anything, and often times it's their physical appearance that's on the cutting board. In other words, a lot of body shaming going on.
Many celebrities have talked about coming across hateful comments on the internet. Heck, there was even a segment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in which celebrities read mean tweets about themselves and reacted in front of the camera. Some might be able to take criticism better than others, but when someone's making fun of the way you look, it's hard not to take it personally.
Celebrities, just like us, are sentient beings. And believe it or not, even stars like Megan Fox have struggled with body dysmorphia. Many are sick and tired of hearing that being body shamed is simply part of the job, and some are even clapping back at the haters. We just had to share five of the most iconic responses telling internet trolls that maybe it's time to take some space from their phones.
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney has never been afraid to speak her mind: like in her 2024 Vanity Fair interview, when she unabashedly let people know that the whole "women empowering women" movement is not happening in Hollywood. It's a "front for all the other sh*t that they say behind everyone's back," Sweeney told the magazine. It's one thing when a veteran actress says something like this, but for a young A-list actress like Sweeney to say it takes a lot of guts. It's obvious Sydney has that courage, as she's responsible for our favorite celeb clapback of all.
In December 2024, multiple media outlets shared paparazzi shots of the actress in a bikini in her own backyard. Yes, her own backyard. And while the privacy invasion is a whole other subject, the body-shamers also showed up thick and fast. They didn't spare a moment to share how they felt about the actress' physical appearance.
Being the badass she is, Sydney didn't take it lightly. She took to her own Instagram to clapback with a compilation video showing comments made about her body. The comments were disgusting to say the least. One user felt comfortable enough to write, "No way that's her. Looks like a lion seal during breeding season." Seriously? People can be just plain mean. The actress doesn't end the video there, though. In a quick montage, the actress is shown dominating hardcore workouts and getting ripped. Game over, guys. Now, that was a legendary clapback.
Jonah Hill
While some may believe body shaming is only targeted at female celebrities, that's absolutely not true. Male celebrities aren't exactly exempt when it comes to this cruel trolling behavior, and Jonah Hill has dealt with it for years. Although the actor deleted his Instagram in 2022 amidst his ongoing battle with anxiety attacks, he shared a respectful and heartfelt message to those feeling the need to comment on his body while he was active on the platform.
In a 2021 post, which was deleted along with the actor's account, Hill wrote about how he struggled to take his shirt off to enjoy a pool day for a long time, and how it might have happened "sooner if [his] childhood insecurities weren't exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviewers" (via Men's Health).
Hill also shared that he is proud that these things no longer "phase [him] anymore," and that he finally loves and accepts himself at age 37. He didn't stop there, adding a message for kids who might be struggling with their own body image. "[This post is] for the kids who don't take their shirt off at the pool," he wrote. "Have fun. You're wonderful and awesome and perfect. All my love." Let's cross our fingers and hope the body-shamers learned a thing or two — and maybe felt empathy after reading the award-winning actor's moving post.
Nicola Coughlan
Nicola Coughlan was hilarious on "Derry Girls", but "Bridgerton" is what really put her on the steps of stardom. The actress isn't just known for her amazing on-screen presence, though. She's also famous for having a great sense of humor off-screen. The gracious Bridgerton star used her comedy chops to clapback at a Twitter user who referred to the actress as "fat girl from Bridgerton" (via Glamour). Nicola didn't let it slide and replied with grace, writing "I thought the cardigan looked ace, Molly Goddard used them on her runway with the dresses that's where the idea came from, also I have a name." Such a class act.
The actress' clapbacks didn't stop there. In a now-deleted post, she also took to Instagram to respectfully request people to stop DMing her every single time they had something to say about her body. She wrote, "Hello ... if you have an opinion about my body, please, please don't share it with me" (via Upworthy). The actress also added, "Most people are being nice ... but I am just one real-life human being, and it's really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day."
Like we said, celebrities are just like us. Wouldn't it be exhausting to hear and read what everyone has to say every single day? The actress' message reminds us that we don't always have to say everything that's on our mind.
Celine Dion
Did you know that even Celine Dion, the queen of power ballads, has haters? The award-winning singer has truly heard it all. Whether it's a comment about the age gap between her and her late husband or a mistake she made on stage, she gets a lot of hate for no reason. Another big comment she's often heard is that she's just "too skinny."
It happened often during her Courage World Tour from 2019 to 2020, when people began assuming she was ill. And yes, while she was officially diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) in 2022, it is never okay to assume someone is sick just based on the way they look. In 2019, she had a message for body-shaming haters.
In an Entertainment Tonight interview on the opening night of her tour in Quebec, she showed the interviewer her biceps and asked, "Is there anything wrong with my body?" She explained that even in her youth, her face may have been rounder, but she was always "very thin." Being the class act she is, the singer acknowledged that criticism was inevitable in the industry. However, she said, "I take what's good for me. I leave behind what is not good for me ... I need to focus on what's right for me, how I feel and, last but not least, you can't please everybody." On or off stage, she is beauty and grace.
Hilary Duff
Lizzie McGuire was an iconic queen who was relentless when it came to standing up for herself or her friends. And Hilary Duff, who played the character, strongly resembles our girl Lizzie. Having been in Hollywood since she was 14 years old, Duff has seen a lot of hate come her way. She was criticized for who she dated, what she ate, her stage presence, and of course, for her looks. Although we don't know what it was like for her behind the scenes, she seemed to take it like a champ by simply ignoring the haters. Motherhood, however, seems to have made her want to speak up.
In 2017, the actress posted a photo of herself enjoying a day on the beach with her son — but the photo wasn't the only thing she had to share. The actress explained that she was sharing her photo to beat the media outlets that love to share "celeb flaws." She added that her body is what gave her "the greatest gift of [her] life," her son. "Let's be proud of what we've got and stop wasting precious time in the day wishing we were different, better, and unflawed. You guys already know how to ruin a good time, and now you are body-shamers as well." Mic drop.
