Outdated Hairstyles In 2025 That Will Instantly Age You (Not That We're Judging)

New year, new hair! In 2025, we're embracing the best and the chicest of hair trends, leaving behind outdated styles and color choices like bad habits. 2025 is all about sexy, natural, effortless 'dos, which means fads from 2024 are getting dropped. Think pastel tones or bright dye colors, like lime green. These are not the looks we're bringing with us into a sparkly, new year.

When it comes to cuts, choppy, asymmetrical bobs are aging and passé. For those who love bobs, don't worry. The short cut is still very much in style, but with a flirtatious twist. Replace those rigid ends with sensual volume like the wavy fullness that comes from the bell-bottom bob. Alternatively, the fob, or fringe bob, is another gorgeous way to nail the voluptuous style we're after in the new year. For those who want to keep their length, big, bouncy curls and lots of layers are on our list of the trendiest haircuts of 2025. Just think of Sabrina Carpenter's hair as a north star.

To get the scoop on avoiding dated styles, Women spoke exclusively with two experts. Edson Ibarra, celebrity hairstylist and resident hair colorist at OVERTONE, gave us sage advice about color tones to avoid, and others to embrace. Maria Jones, hairstylist at CoverClap, guided us in the right direction when it comes to bobs, length, and volume, all things we want to consider in the coming months.

Avoid overly-polished curls

Sorry, prom queens! While curls are big in 2025, fussy, heavily coiffed ends are the wrong vibe. "[T]he over-polished, tight spiral curls achieved by using small-barrel curling irons are just starting to feel passé," Jones exclusively explained. She offered a trendier alternative. "To those who want to stay in fashion, I recommend studying modern, easy-to-wear images. The long layered shag with curtain bangs, for example, is a great fit because it forms such a great framing of the face and looks wonderful with various textures," Jones offered. Curl with a wider barrel to avoid curls that are too tight.

Leave pastel tones behind

Unfortunately, unnatural tones are not in vogue for 2025. Ibarra told Women that it's best to avoid neon hues, as well as chalkier, softer dyed looks. "Even pastels like lilac and mint are making way for earthy, skin-flattering tones," Ibarra explained. This isn't to say that dyed hair is out. Not at all. The secret is that 2025 is all about natural beauty, and finding colors to enhance this.

"In 2025, hair color trends will spotlight rich, luxurious tones that celebrate depth and vibrancy," Ibarra said. Think deep brunettes or reds. For those who want to stay light, cashmere blond or a strawberry blond tone is also a vibrant choice that's right on the pulse of style.

Say goodbye to the asymmetrical bob

Bobs are getting a makeover in 2025. Jones told Women that one of the most outdated cut of the year is the asymmetrical bob. It makes sense. This cut is defined by its harsh, disconnected layers. As such, this blunt cut doesn't align with the fresh movement that's dominating the new year.

"Blunt bobs in a textured cut are great, but if they can be combined with soft waves or a tousled finish to add volume and depth, it would be so much better," Jones said. "These hairstyles look fresh, not only that, but they also suit many face shapes and are low-maintenance, hence perfect for the modern woman." So steer clear of sharp edges, and embrace the feminine volume of bobs that offer more movement.

Cool, ashy tones are out

2025 is all about rich, warm colors, says Ibarra. "[H]air color trends are shifting toward warm, natural tones. Cool, ashy blondes are out, replaced by golden hues," she adds.

There's a lot of wiggle room here. For brunettes who want to add a pop of red to their locks, Ibarra suggested looking for tones like cherry chestnut to warm the hair while still keeping things natural. Auburn tones are still very much in style as well. Warm, rich palettes are where it's at.

Replace the messy bun with a more sophisticated 'do

Also known as the "lazy bun," the messy bun is a thing of the past. It's simply too casual, living up to its messy name. While everyone needs an easy hairdo for low-key days, we're swapping out the messy bun for something more sensual but just as effortless.

Replace this style with an easy French twist, or the '90s Pamela Anderson updo. They're just as simple, but get way more mileage. Another sophisticated alternative is a low, sleek bun. Wear your hair slicked back and secure it above the nape of the neck for a versatile style. It looks just as good with a glam outfit as it does with athleisure wear.

The wolf cut has had its moment

While layers, face-framing pieces, and curtain bangs are still very much in style, the particular shagginess of the wolf cut has run its course. Identifiable by its choppy layers, shag-like finish, and mullet shape, the wolf cut was huge for a good chunk of 2024. But with chunk being the operative word, this bluntly layered style doesn't set the right tone for 2025.

Instead, the hair theme of the year is sexy, smooth layers with big bounce and vivacious volume. If you tried the wolf cut in 2024, don't fret. Luckily, the wolf cut is easy to grow out and this new growth can be transformed into something that's just right for the new year.
