5 Victoria Beckham Outfits That Totally Missed The Mark

Long before the world got to know Victoria Beckham the clothing designer and fashion icon, she was Posh Spice of the Spice Girls. At the time, the Spice Girls were popular the world over, and Posh played up her role as the, well, "posh" one of the group. But the funny thing about being posh in the 1990s and early 2000s is that it's a far cry from what one might consider timeless sophistication today. In fact, looking back at Beckham's style evolution, there have been several times where she just completely missed the mark.

Beckham has no shame in those moments, though, she says. "People always say, 'Do you cringe? And I say, Not at all.' Everybody changes," Beckham told Time in 2009 about her fearless take on fashion. "I love fashion, and I love changing my style, my hair, my makeup, and everything I've done in the past has made me what I am now. Not everyone is going to like what I do, but I look back at everything, and it makes me smile."

Still, while Beckham might not have any fashion regrets, that doesn't mean her outfit choices were always on point. We're taking a look at five times her looks just didn't work.

Whatever this leather situation was in 1999

As much as this look will always be iconic (in a strange way), Victoria Beckham is haunted by it to this day. In 2022, on "Watch What Happens Live," Beckham admitted to Andy Cohen that this Millennium New Year's Eve Party in 1999 look was a bad idea.

"I still ... I mean it haunts me. It does haunt me, but I love it," Beckham said. "It was hot. We were wearing Gucci. It was a Versace dinner, which is inappropriate in itself ... But, you know, we really considered those outfits. I mean we really talked about it. There was a naivety to it that was just so sweet." It may have totally missed the mark, but darn, these matching leather jackets and pants will always be memorable.

This leather, zebra-striped mini-dress

Let's be honest: the late 1990s and early 2000s were a difficult time for Victoria Beckham's style. She may have been internationally known as Posh Spice, but as far as fashion goes, her choices left much to be desired. In 2007, Beckham attended the MTV Movie Awards and wore this mini-dress that appears to be leather and with a print that may or may not be zebra-inspired.

She has her bra exposed which, at the time, was very Carrie Bradshaw, so kudos for that. Also, yes, this hairstyle was considered the height of ultra-cool at the time. But more than anything, she looks like she's trying to pull off a summertime version of a the mob wife aesthetic and failing miserably.

A head handkerchief out in public

In October 2000, Victoria Beckham was spotted at a mall in LA with her mom while wearing this ensemble. While Beckham can't be faulted for the baggy pants, which were popular at the time and have made a comeback with the rise of Y2K fashion, it's her choice to wear a Burberry scarf on her head — as if she's about to go outside to do some gardening — that's a bit confusing to the senses.

Even in 2000, such a move was far from the Posh Spice image she had built, and was an overall bad decision on her part. Beckham may have thought it was the ultimate hair complement at the time, but it really was anything but. It just looked silly and out of place — especially at a mall in LA.

A matching outfit miss

By the time 2003 rolled around, the world already knew that Victoria and David Beckham were big into matching each other at events. Actually, this seemed to be a common theme for a lot of celebrity couples in the early 2000s. Who can forget Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake showing up to the 2001 American Music Awards in matching head-to-toe denim?

For the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, the Beckhams arrived wearing these matching outfits. While David's is just a simple white suit, it's the lace-up front and all the rhinestone-like embellishments on Victoria's dress that leave one wondering if she has a mirror at home.

Channeling Sally Bowles at an event honoring women

Victoria Beckham's outfit for the 2007 Annual Glamour Women of Year Awards left many wondering what inspired her to wear what appears to be a strapless leotard, matching fingerless gloves, and a white bolero jacket.

If Beckham were headed to the VMAs or auditioning to play Sally Bowles in "Cabaret," then sure, this look could make sense. But considering she was going to an event that was honoring women, as well as their contributions and achievements, this outfit is a miss on so many levels. Also, the gloves? Why, Victoria, why?!
