5 Outdated Trends We Can't Believe Ivanka Trump Wore

You could argue that Ivanka Trump knows what she's doing when it comes to fashion trends. The former White House fixture, who has now separated herself from Donald Trump's second term as president, typically looks put-together whenever she's out in public. But, like many other celebs, Trump has on occasion, diverted from usual go-to formulas and missed the mark, which should come as reassuring to those who like to take risks. After all, too much perfection in a wardrobe can become boring, and we've got to give credit when people step out of their comfort zones.

However, over the years, we've seen Ivanka lean too much into the peplum trend, and the flounces and frills felt out of style. She loves skinny jeans, something many Millennials have been unable to quit, despite all the information about them being an outdated trend. We've also seen Ivanka Trump wear outfits that fell flat, not so much in terms of fashion trends but more in terms of the political climate or the occasion. For example, she once wore a gown that looked like a long shirt dress while attending a banquet at Buckingham Palace. The gown was great, but it wasn't the right choice for the setting. On other occasions, however, Ivanka simply wore something that felt like it was trendy ten or fifteen years ago, and didn't work with the rest of her contemporary styling choices.

Ivanka's heavy pleats on a wide skirt seemed decades too late

When Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner visited Westminster Abbey in London on June 3, 2019. They joined Donald and Melania Trump as they laid a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. Following the tradition of British royal women, Ivanka wore a white fascinator by Philip Treacy that sat far down on her forehead.

While the fascinator just didn't work, it was the cut of Ivanka's skirt suit, by Alessandra Rich, that made the entire ensemble feel outdated. Her blazer featured billowy shoulders and sleeves, while the peplum-style belt resulted in an explosion of pleats at the base of her blazer. Though it seemed as if Trump was going for a vintage look, the added pleats on the skirt combined with the peplum top came across as too voluminous and busy. The roundness of the sleeves and fascinator, juxtaposed by the sharp edges from the pleats, created too many shapes.

This billowy, peplum peasant top wasn't it

On July 29, 2018, Ivanka Trump returned to the White House with husband, Jared Kushner, and their children. While it was a nice family scene, Ivanka sported not one but two outdated looking pieces. Her pale blue, peplum-style blouse, with its oversized sleeves, was better suited to a pirates' ship than a contemporary, Washington landscape. Not only that, the blouse didn't flatter her frame and made her appear top-heavy. In addition, Ivanka paired the blouse with white skinny jeans. Ivanka is no stranger to the form-fitting denim, despite it being widely panned as an outdated cut, and she continues to wear it anyway.

Her blue patchwork dress was a blast from the past

Ivanka Trump wore a busy blue dress that seemed unlike her normal, sophisticated style. On June 27, 2010, Ivanka attended the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic on Governors Island in New York City. For the occasion, she sported a blue, knee-length dress that featured a crisscross neckline made up of several strings of tonal blue, as well as several different patterns, including a gingham-style section with a white diamond of fabric at its center, and swirling, paisley-like patches. The quizzical number felt like it had emerged from the 1970s, thanks to its many prints and busy layout.

Ivanka Trump's black and blue flower dress felt dated

In 2015, Ivanka Trump attended the launch of the Women's Brain Health Initiative in New York City. For the occasion, she wore a black sheath dress that was decorated in teal blue designs across the chest and sleeves. While the shape of the dress was fine, the design felt aging on her. On top of that, the floral decal reminded us of something a more mature woman might buy at the mall in 2005. It wasn't her best look.

Ivanka Trump went for the shoulder pads ... in 2006

Ivanka Trump attended the 2006 Carolina Herrera fashion show at Bryant Park in New York City. For the occasion, she wore a yellow plaid skirt suit that was incredibly aging on her. The biggest problem was that the ensemble was structured around some sizeable shoulder pads, and these made the suit look boxy and shapeless. Not only was the getup unflattering; it was also out of style. She looked like a secretary in a '90s sitcom, rather than the Manhattan socialite that she was at the time. The dusty blue blouse underneath and the red kitten heels were also misses.
