Lara Trump Outfits That Totally Missed The Mark
Lara Trump's exposure has skyrocketed thanks to her father-in-law President Donald Trump — and while she usually looks fantastic at her various public appearances, she's had some outfit fumbles in the last few years. It's no dis whatsoever on Lara. These things happen to everyone, and the Trump women have faced some increased scrutiny of late because of their heightened publicity. Nevertheless, there have been some big fashion and makeup mistakes from women in the Trump family, including some less-than-perfect looks from Ivanka Trump and overuse of bronzer by Lara.
While Lara is known as the daughter-in-law of President Trump thanks to her marriage to his son Eric Trump, she's also made a name for herself beyond her family. Lara had her own career as a TV producer before her marriage, and later took on responsibilities during her father-in-law's presidential campaigns. In 2024, she toured for Donald Trump to increase his popularity among female voters. It was at some of these campaign trail stops that Lara missed the mark with her sartorial decisions, and the voting public wasn't shy about letting her know.
Lara Trump's New Year's Eve dress caused a ruckus
Lara Trump leaned into sparkle for the Mar-a-Lago New Year's Eve party she attended along with hubby Eric Trump and the rest of the Trump clan. She posted a photo of her look on Instagram on January 1, 2024, crediting fashion designer Oscar Lopez for her sparkly dress, which featured a hip-high slit and a plunging neckline covered by sheer, sequin fabric.
We've got to praise Lara's commitment to bold choices, but people were very divided about this gown, with several calling it "trashy" or "too provocative" in Insta comments. "Looks like you are going to a Halloween party!" one person wrote. In an interview with TMZ after the uproar, Lopez stood by his design, which he said was designed to emphasize elegance and sensuality. The designer pushed back against the trolls and said Lara wore the white gown beautifully.
Lara's American flag dress was not a hit
Lara Trump stirred up all kinds of controversy online when she wore a red, white, and blue dress modelled after the American flag. She posted her look to Instagram on December 10, 2023, standing alongside Eric Trump who was dressed in a matching blue suit with a red tie. "When you tell us the theme is 'patriotic', we will deliver," Lara joked in the caption.
The knee-length dress featured a blue flap that hung down the back like a cape, and the blue piece on the chest glittered with stars. All together, it was a little too costumey for us, and some fans agreed. "Way to disrespect the flag!" someone commented. "This is truly an ugly dress," another wrote.
Despite the criticism, Lara didn't give up on the patriotic garb. On November 6, 2024, after President Donald Trump won the election, designer Oscar Lopez posted a video to Instagram of Lara in the same dress. "Congratulations my rockstar!" he wrote, as Lara twirled in red, white, and blue.
Lara tried to sell a MAGA Barbie hat, but people weren't buying it
Lara Trump put a new twist on the Barbie pink obsession in 2023, exhibiting a MAGA Barbie look on Instagram for Halloween. While it wasn't a bad idea, the look wasn't so much fun and flirty as political and promotional, and kind of put a damper on the Halloween spirit. Lara was clearly serious about capitalizing on the Barbie trend and selling some merch. On X, formerly known as Twitter, she posted a video of herself wearing the pink MAGA hat and wrote: "Be a Trump girl, in a Trump world," along with a link to purchase the hats.
The $47 cost of Lara's hats only added to the upset, per Newsweek. For many, even diehard fans, it felt like a cash grab. "I support the cause. BUT $50 for a hat is insane! Where is this the norm??? It probably costs $2 to make," someone commented on X. Another made note of the Barbie likeness, and mentioned that Mattel might not like it. "47 for a fu**ing hat with a copyright infringement?" they asked. People just weren't buying the MAGA Barbie hat, literally or figuratively.
Her Make America Hot Again hat didn't go down so well either
Lara Trump had another unfortunate hat incident that struck many as tone-deaf. On August 20, 2022, she posted a selfie to Instagram of her wearing a pink hat that read: "Make America Hot Again." Lara was obviously referring to attractiveness, but it was an uncomfortable message considering the fact that her father-in-law, President Donald Trump, has consistently denied climate change.
In fact, Donald Trump called the climate crisis "one of the great scams of all time" in one of his speeches, according to The Guardian. People were very unhappy with Lara's hat, and piped up on X. "Is that the maga response to global warming?" someone asked. "So she is promoting global warming?" another person commented. Clearly, this look didn't send the right message.
Lara Trump wore camo to the border
For her 2024 visit to the southern border of the United States, Lara Trump wore jeans, green combat boots, and a camouflage print jacket, which just struck the wrong note. Many felt that this was a curious print to wear to the border, as it implied she would somehow be facing combat, since camo is traditionally worn by the military. Not to mention the print is totally outdated.
"The camo? ...maybe a little too much, doncha think Lara?" one user wrote on X. Although Lara seemed happy about the visit — writing "incredible trip, in the middle of the night, to our southern border" — her choice of outfit felt a little too much like cosplay to many.
