5 Styling Tips To Stay Chic In Your 60s And Beyond
To be chic is a skill. Literally. Assumed to have come from the German word, "shick," meaning "tact, skill, aptness," chic isn't settling for mediocrity. Instead, it's about standing out, breaking rules, and starting trends as opposed to following them. Although anyone can be chic, it takes a bit of effort — in the most effortlessly cool sort of way.
As we get older it can be hard to feel like we've still got it, so to speak, in the style department. Sometimes people feel that the easiest way to be chic is to lean into fads or dress younger than they are, but true chicness is nothing of the sort. In order to be chic, one must embrace age with confidence and drown out negativity. It's as much about who you are, as your authentic self, as it is about the clothes you wear. "[Chic] is one of the easiest, and most easily maintained fashion styles one can opt for," etiquette expert, lifestyle consultant, and founder of Etiquette Expert Jo Hayes exclusively tells Women. "Including and especially, as one matures."
But because much of modern society isn't exactly keen on people of a certain age being chic, as it threatens the patriarchy's conceptions of women over 60, Women not only spoke to Hayes, but also Founder and CEO of Barkev's, Barkev Meserlian, about how to stay stylish into your latter years. Or, if you've never considered yourself fashionable, now is your chance to become so.
Create a classic capsule collection
As much as trends can be fun to indulge in from time to time, the real secret to staying chic is sticking to timeless pieces. "I recommend curating a classic capsule wardrobe [of] good quality, classic pieces that will last for years," says Jo Hayes. If you're not sure what that means, then think of things that never go out of style like trench coats and jeans.
According to Hayes, you want that capsule collection to have "the essentials," which includes a pair of shorts in navy or white that can go with everything, white tee shirts, both long and short sleeve, as well as a collared white button-down shirt. Hayes also suggests having at least one nautical striped shirt, white tennis shoes, an array of sweaters in neutral colors, and a pair of flats that work well with both jeans and skirts or dresses. Anything that could have been worn just as easily in 1960 as it can be worn today is something worth putting your classic capsule collection. "Classic is always in style, and with this classic capsule wardrobe, one can stay stylish and chic, no matter the season or current fashion," says Hayes. "One can style as is, or add a piece that is on-trend with a current-season color or item."
Purchase quality over quantity
While everyone loves a bargain, if you want to be forever chic, prioritize quality. Chain stores supply fast fashion, which is basically cheaply made clothes that will last only one season, if that. So while you may think you're getting a deal, you're really not. You're spending the same, if not more, but over time as opposed to just in one purchase. "Buy the best quality that you can afford," says Jo Hayes. "Not only will high-quality pieces look and feel better, but they last far longer than cheaper, chain-store, options."
Keep in mind that high quality doesn't have to mean expensive. And in some cases, pricy items may not necessarily mean a good one. Instead, pay attention to what the garment label says and look for high quality materials. Fabrics like silk, cashmere, and 100% cotton not only look nicer than cheap polyester; they're also durable.
High-quality garments are also better for the environment — and that's something we should all be thinking about. According to a 2024 study published in Science of the Total Environment, fast fashion accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions and its carbon footprint is 11 times higher than fashion that's made traditionally. In other words, don't buy the loafers from Shein that are $15. Instead, embrace the slow fashion movement: save up and invest in a pair of loafers by a reputable and ethical designer that will last. Being environmentally conscious is chic.
Find a good tailor
Tragically, not everyone is able to have their clothes made to their specifications. When clothes don't fit right, they not only look and feel a bit off, but they're not likely to stand the test of time either. That's where a tailor comes in. Tailors don't just hem pieces, but can reinforce them with higher-quality materials than the original ones used, so you not only look chic and fabulous in the moment, but you will continue to be so for years down the road.
"A badly fitting garment is a waste of your money," tailor Kathryn Sargent tells Refinery 29. "The art is giving the client a garment that not only makes them look good but makes them feel good, too. A good fit should deliver style and elegance but also confidence and comfort." While hiring a tailor for specific pieces will definitely make them more expensive, in the long run, you'll be doing your wallet — and your wardrobe — a favor. You'll also feel amazing having clothes that fit you the way clothes are supposed to fit. Remember: being chic is also about attitude, and confidence comes in knowing you look your absolute best.
Invest in timeless jewelry pieces
A few pieces of jewelry instantly elevates an outfit no matter what your age is. "Consider investing in timeless and elegant pearl or diamond studs," Barkev Meserlian exclusively tells Women.com. "These ageless styles will always be in vogue. They are versatile pieces that can not only provide an understated glow that flatters mature skin tones without overwhelming your overall look, but also be suitable for both everyday use and upscale events."
But don't be afraid to explore statement pieces that will really make you stand out in the crowd and get people talking. "Women in their 60s and beyond may also consider cocktail rings that are embellished with bigger gemstones," says Meserlian, adding that bold rings with bright gems like sapphire or amethyst can infuse the right amount of luxury. "Larger stones make a statement and draw attention to your hands, reflecting confidence and refined taste."
Have a signature color
It seems like there's some unspoken rule that the older you get, your wardrobe has to become limited to black, white, brown, and navy. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Shades of pink, purple, green, and yellow can bring playfulness and vibrancy to a mature wardrobe — You just need to be smart about choosing the right shades for you.
Colors that complement your complexion are key — especially since it's likely your skin coloring has changed with age. This goes for both your clothing and accessories. "Subdued shades are gentler against mature skin and can help bring out a natural radiance," says Barkev Meserlian while talking about gem stones like aquamarine or rose quartz. "They add color but are also more subdued, which is precisely what is needed for a more sophisticated aesthetic."
Personal style is timeless, and having a signature color that makes you feel confident is an essential component in staying forever chic. If you're not sure where to begin, start with working a subtle pop of color into your wardrobe — through a scarf or a hat.
