Outdated Trends Selena Gomez Was Caught Wearing

It's rare for Selena Gomez to miss on the red carpet, so the few occasions where she's sported outdated looks are notable. Normally, the singer and actor absolutely kills it, rocking something that's timeless, flattering, and polished. It's just one of the many reasons we love her so much. Gomez has shared some beauty looks we'll never forget, and we return to them for inspiration.

Part of Gomez's endless appeal is that she loves to take fashion risks. Most of the time, this pays off, but once in a while, an outfit flops. Best of all, Gomez herself has a sense of humor about her own sartorial journey. Going over her life in looks with Vogue in June 2021, she talked about her 2007 outfit at the ABC All Stars Party, where she wore a white, slouchy top with black skinny jeans and white, heeled boots. While it was trendy then, the look didn't age well. "Oh, it's bad. It's just so bad," she began, later adding, "But in my defense, it was very Paramore, Ashlee Simpson days, and I'm not apologetic about that phase of my life." That's the perfect attitude to have towards evolving fashion, and with that sense of humor in mind, we're looking back at moments when Gomez missed the mark.

Selena's orange, velvet dress was a vintage look that should have stayed in the past

The high-collar, long-hemmed dress that Selena Gomez wore in November 2019 to the ACLU SoCal's Bill of Rights dinner had a lot going on. The burnt orange, velvet dress had roots in the 1970s, thanks to the texture as well as the exaggerated collar and long sleeves. It was certainly a risky choice, so Gomez gets points for that. However, the midi hemline and high neckline was aging on Gomez and felt outdated compared to her usual, contemporary glamor. On top of that, the vintage-style dress' textured stripes felt excessively busy, giving a slight herringbone pattern.

Selena's tapered business slacks were not the best pants

Cropped slacks were the go-to office look of the 2010s, and have been replaced by wide-leg trousers. But for Gomez, the tapered look still holds strong, as she stepped out wearing a pair in February 2024 for a special screening of "Lola" in Westwood, California. Although the other elements of the "Hands to Myself" singer's outfit worked — the cream bustier and oversized blazer were incredible, as was the white Valentino clutch – the tapered, workwear slacks gave the outfit a dated feel.

Selena Gomez went for the concealer lips at the Met Gala

At the Met Gala in May 2018, Selena Gomez resurrected a makeup trend from the late 2000s known as the concealer lip. The pale pout was the infamous predecessor to the nude lip, except notably more pale and matte. It was everywhere in 2001, with people applying a nude base, like concealer, to make their lips vanish. Thankfully, the style has been replaced by more intentional lip tones, where even the currently trendy nude lip offers a bit of color and shape thanks to a lip liner and rosier tones.

Selena's boxy blazer was a blast from the '80s

Boxy, cropped blazers were a staple of '80s fashion that had a brief return in the early 2000s. However, by May 2024, they were long considered a look of the past. It seems Selena Gomez missed that memo, as she stepped out in New York City that month in a pale blue, boxy blazer with a coordinating mini skirt featuring wavy blue and black horizontal stripes. Opting for a more fitted top would have balanced the visual lines of the outfit, but instead, the wide-cut blazer was too boxy and shapeless, serving an unflattering silhouette on the gorgeous Gomez. However, her red leather boots really saved the day and added an edgier splash of color.

Asymmetrical hems are always tricky

The high-low hemline was made popular in 2012 by Proenza Schouler, and became a big fad in the 2010's. Since then, it has been replaced by standard cuts to keep the focus on the gown itself, rather than its sloped end. So you can imagine our surprise when Selena Gomez stepped out in a red Giorgio Armani Privé gown with a diagonal asymmetrical hemline at the 2024 Golden Globes.Although the slanted cut was distracting, Gomez still managed to look absolutely radiant by pairing the gown with crimson heels, a slicked bun, and dazzling jewelry.
