Outdated Trends Modern Family Star Sarah Hyland Was Caught Wearing

Sarah Hyland has grown from a sitcom teen star to a full-blown red carpet icon. Her stunning transformation into a relatable and vulnerable public figure has been accompanied by a self-care journey and a major wardrobe glow-up. The "Modern Family" star is known for fashionable choices, and she has plenty of great red carpet looks under her belt.

But, like all of us, she doesn't always quite get it right. Being a fashion heavy hitter requires taking a few risks and they don't all pan out. So Hyland has donned a few less-than-fabulous styles over the years. But, like anyone known for going big with fashion, she's got a healthy attitude toward her missteps: "I don't think you ever make fashion mistakes because if you like it at that time, then it wasn't a mistake," she told TEENProm (via People).

For the 2013 Emmy Awards, Sarah Hyland hit the red carpet in a vibrant green gown with a plunging neckline, black accents, and a lace overlay. The look was from CH by Caroline Herrera. Though the emerald green dress was beautiful in its own right, the heavy color combination didn't suit Hyland's spring color palette, and the effect aged the young star. Ultimately, the bold color and detailed texture are overly fussy and the combination seems to overwhelm Hyland's tiny frame.

The custom Vera Wang gown that Sarah Hyland wore for the 2015 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards featured a dark, sheer skirt contrasting with a busy, bejeweled bodice. Though the gown is appropriately glamorous for the formal event, the two pieces of the gown feel disjointed and distract from Hyland's natural beauty.

Although Hyland seems to love a bold and graphic look, this design already felt behind by the time she wore it. By 2015, the bright color palette was starting to become off-trend, as red carpet fashion began to gravitate toward more muted and sophisticated color palettes.

The Monique Lhuillier look that Sarah Hyland wore for the 2016 Emmy Awards featured a strapless corset top, cropped pants, and a sheer overskirt. The ensemble made a dramatic statement with a floor-length top –– words that should never go together. The tight, black pants look suspiciously stretchy, giving this ensemble a real dress-with-leggings vibe that might be better suited to a college freshman mixer than on the red carpet. Even by 2016, the "leggings under a dress" trend had passed its prime, so the generally fashion-forward Hyland looks strangely stuck in the past.

A newly engaged Sarah Hyland stepped out at the 2019 FOX Teen Choice Awards in a two-piece lace set. The star paired the Teresa Helbig cropped top and skirt with towering orange heels from Loriblu. But while the set flattered the star's figure and displayed her toned midriff, it still felt a little out of date.

Midriff-baring sets hit their peak back around 2016. Plus, given the length and sheer material, the ensemble looked more appropriate for a day at the beach than a red carpet event.

For the 2020 SAG Awards, Sarah Hyland wore a voluminous lavender-colored dress with a plunging neckline, flirty skirt, and long train. The floral design was created by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafina. "If my legs got cold I had an extra built-in blanket," quipped Hyland when she shared the look on Instagram.

And while the look is flattering on Hyland — especially for the way it showcases her killer legs — the bold color palette and flouncy silhouette felt a little too '80s.
