Brittany Mahomes' Republican Makeup Fail Had Us Cringing

Of all the issues dividing party lines — taxes, healthcare, foreign policy — who could have foreseen that beauty would be campaigning for a top spot on the ballot? On TikTok, cosmetics has become a political statement, with "Republican makeup" and "Liberal makeup" emerging as beauty buzzwords. The latter leans into natural looks with dewy and glossy skin, but it started with the former — when viral comedienne Suzanne Lambert noticed a distinct aesthetic associated with conservative women: cakey bases, thick contour, plastered lipstick, and overworked brows. Some swear by it as a fully-formed look; others find it frankly unflattering.

Either way, no amount of political spin can change this the fact that Brittany Mahomes' glam on Super Bowl weekend did not win voters over. The wife of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes may be known for her gaudy gameday outfits, but one pre-match moment had the internet cringing. Two nights before the big game, she stepped out in New Orleans with besties Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift (who herself has been serving ultimate WAG glam lately) — and straight into the ongoing beauty culture war.

Brittany's entire face was thrown off balance by the heavily concentrated bronzer and contour. The undereye concealer was several shades too bright, making the flash photography an unforgiving enemy. What's more, her weighty eyeliner seemed to drag her features down. The dark liner on her lower lash line made her eyes appear odd, rather than bright and lifted. Her lip shade, a washed-out beige, also left her complexion looking drained.

Brittany Mahomes' makeup looks are as contentious as she is

Much like a doomed piece of legislation, Brittany Mahomes' double date night style choices simply didn't pass the vote. Onlookers were quick to cast their opinions online. One joked, "as the prophecy foretold," whilst another mused, "her commitment to never slay is admirable." Somebody even asked if she borrowed Donald Trump's foundation for her contour, a comparison no amount of strategic blending could outdo.

In an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump described Brittany Mahomes phenomenal. He went on to say of the former women's football star, "She's a Trump fan, she's a MAGA fan, so I happen to love her." With that kind of endorsement, it's perhaps no surprise she's one of Republican makeup's biggest repeat offenders. In another makeup mistake that totally ruined her look, an Instagram snap with hubby Patrick Mahomes (whose relationship has red flags we just can't ignore) showed her bronzer, contour, and blush slapped onto her cheeks far too low — giving her an unsightly sagging effect. Worse still, instead of achieving a seamless gradient from contour to blush, the tones merged into a murky, indistinct color — a prime example of improper placement and blending. The lips, once again, were lacquered in a hue that made her entire visage look lackluster.

Of course, how anybody chooses to do their makeup is deeply personal. But as we know, the personal is political. We just wish these particular beauty moments had been subject to a bit more bipartisan approval.
