Previously Outdated Beauty Trends That Are Coming Back With A Vengeance In 2025
Like the seasons, styles come and go, but they always make their way back around. When it comes to fashion, In 2023, we embraced the return of the oversized handbag that dominated the magazine pages in the 2000s. By fall of 2024, our favorite celebs brought back the Millennial favorite skinny scarf trend. Sometimes, when a makeup trend vanishes, it's for a good reason. As many of us learned from TikTok, eyebrow blindness was indeed a thing in 2016.
Other beauty trends, however, have caught us by surprise by coming back with a vengeance in the 2020s. Makeup artists Lauren Martinez and Christin Cook Zito spoke exclusively with Women.com about beauty trends that we thought were long gone that are making a comeback in 2025.
Cook Zito said that during a recent trip to Japan, a place she noted is usually ahead of the U.S. with style, they noticed people wearing some hair trends that many of us once cringed at. They hinted that it's likely we'll see these styles come back to the U.S. in the coming months. "We will soon see a lot more exaggerated layered haircuts where sections were less blended and more dramatic and almost chunky as they framed the face."
Eye-catching lips
Makeup artist Lauren Martinez said that following the red lip's winter moment, coral could be just around the corner come summer. "Picture sheer jelly tints and glossy formulas that pair perfectly with radiant skin," she said. The coral lip was popular in the 1970s, as a compliment to the relaxed hair trends.
"Glossy and frosted or metallic lip looks are also a '90s and early 2000s trend that I think will be seen a lot more in 2025," Christin Cook Zito adds. "This time around I think the formulas will be more nourishing and less drying than they were in the 90s and 2000s. The matte and nude lip look has really been played out, so I think we are headed back to shine and dimension!" NYX has a highly rated Butter Gloss that comes in a variety of colors to make your lips shine in 2025
Fun, shimmery pop star eyeshadow
Since 2024, Y2K fashion and beauty has been taking the world by storm...again. Both Martinez and Cook Zito told Women.com believe that 2025 will be the year where eyeshadow finds its voice in the pop star style glam that dominated the 2000s.
"Searches for baby blue skyrocketed after the 2024 Grammys thanks to Sabrina Carpenter," Lauren Martinez said. She added that maximalist styles, especially ones that were popular in the '80s, have returned to the runway, while popular brands like Charlotte Tilbury have launched frosted blue shadow sticks and palettes.
Christin Cook Zito confirmed the return of this Y2k style eyeshadow glam, emphasizing that metallic glitter will be a defining feature for these looks. "It's an easy way to add a fun pop to your eyes and really draw attention there," they said. So, if you ever wanted to flaunt bright eyeshadow looks like Christina Aguilera, the queen of bold eyeshadow, now is your chance! Throwback photos show the singer loved a frosted blue eyeshadow and sometimes added glitter.
Red nails
Although you could argue the red never really went out of style as a polish color, in recent years, it seemed to take a backseat to more natural looking manicures, like Hailey Bieber's glazed donut nails and the soap nails trend. But for 2025, the bold, classic look is back in full swing.
Part of this may be due to social media. In 2022, TikTok creator Robyn Delmonte, coined the term "red nails theory," where she argued that whenever she wore red nails, a "guy would always comment on it." Delmonte added in her TikTok that she believed men were so attracted to the color because it may have been what their moms wore. Though nail experts are skeptical of this theory, manicurist Julie Kandalec told PopSugar that the theory "greatly depends on when both the men being discussed, as well as their mothers grew up."

Red nails have stood the test of time and has been a great way to make a statement. Plus, there are so many shades to choose from that range from bright to deep. From the famous Big Apple Red by OPI Nail Lacquer or Essie's Deep Red Wine, you will have heads turning.
Blowouts
Though we can all agree that the blowout is a timeless classic, there seems to be a division on who came up with the style in the 1960s. According to The Cut, the style was invented by French hairstylist Patrick Alès in 1965 after "he created his own round brush that would allow the hair to naturally fall the way it was meant to, loose, with a subtle bend at the ends." Rose Cannan, a London-based hairstylist, is also considered the creator of the style back in the '60s, W Magazine said. But one thing is for sure, the hairstyle quickly caught on and even style Icon and former First Lady, Jackie O would become synonymous with the hairdo.
Since the '60s, the style has changed with the culture, going pretty big in the '70s, and reaching new heights in the '80s. The blowout later had a resurgence in the '90s thanks to model Cindy Crawford and Alicia Silverstone in her iconic role as Cher in "Clueless." But as sleeker, straighter styles grew in popularity, the blowout became less of a go-to.
So, it is no surprise the classic look is making a comeback in 2025 along with other '90s trends, thanks to celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter.
Natural beauty is on the rise
You have probably seen people posting pictures on social media of celebrities like Aaliyah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kate Moss and others from the '90s and early 2000s, talking about how much they miss when people appeared to rock the bare skin look. There's been a push for taking a more minimalist approach to face makeup as the stars of this era did, including no-makeup makeup and subtle cosmetic work.
Along with this shift, Christin Cook Zito anticipates a reduction in the popularity of lip injections and lash extensions. "I think these are trends that have become so overdone that it's only natural we will see the pendulum begin to swing in the other direction soon," they exclusively told Women. Someone that comes to mind is Pamela Anderson, who has been rocking every red carpet she is on with her beautiful natural face. Alicia Keys is another celebrity that has been flaunting her natural beauty over the last few years. But for people that do get cosmetic procedures and want to wear their false lashes, do what makes you feel comfortable in your own skin!
