For a long time, it seemed like the go-to outfit formula spring skinny jeans and wedges. But if you've been following fashion for the past few years, you know warm weather styles have changed. 2024 brought several new denim trends to our closets, including the infamous barrel jean, a style frequently paired with then-trendy athletic ballet flat.

When it comes to getting denim right this year, there are more options than ever."The overall jean trend for spring 2025 are oversized, baggy or relaxed denim. Unlike skinny jeans that naturally come across as usually a polished look, baggy jeans can be dressed up or down, cool or edgy with your shoe choice," Amanda Massi, a Los Angeles and Las Vegas-based Personal and Celebrity Stylist, exclusively tells Women.com.

If you're looking for the right shoes to pair with any of the denim trends dominating in 2025, start by looking for a shoe that contradicts the vibe of your jeans. Your shoe doesn't necessarily need to be fashion-forward to pair well with your denim. While some choices, like loafers and sling-backs are trendy themselves, don't be afraid to reach for something a little more classic like a knee-high boot. What matters most is how well the shoe flatters the silhouette and vibe of the pants themselves.

"Y2K is being reinterpreted which means oversized or flared denim with pointed toed shoes are comin' on back into our closets," Amanda Massi exclusively tells Women.com. 

Even better, flared jeans can be style for any occasion and work with multiple shoe styles, with makes it a great versatile option for different aesthetics. "Flares go with a pointed-toe boot or heeled sandals, addressing the leg line and giving it a sleek and elongated silhouette," says Tina Costa.

While you could go for any pointed toe, the best options will feature some kind of heel to maintain a lengthy silhouette. It doesn't have to be a high one, either. "Pointed-toe sling-backs work wonders as they elongate the legs and polish the overall look," explains Albert Varkki, co-founder of luxury leather brand Von Baer, in an exclusive interview with Women.com. "Platform loafers can also be paired with flared jeans if you are going for a 70s-inspired vibe." A heeled sandal is another option that will give you extra height and lean into the style's dramatic silhouette without competing for attention.

Speaking of retro vibes, the loose silhouette of wide-leg jeans allows you to flex a little '70s inspiration with your footwear. That's because the heavy, oversized silhouette of the pant requires a larger shoe that won't get buried underneath the hem. "Maximum-width jeans are best offset by platform sandals or chunky sneakers," Tina Loyd, CEO of Dallas-based dress brand Terry Costa, exclusively tells Women.com.

Albert Varkki, fashion expert and Co-Founder of Von Baer is on the same page. "Bulky wide-leg jeans demand structure when it comes to footwear," he says. "For a casual and cool vibe, retro sneakers should be the go-to choice. A minimalist mule with block heels will balance the look while adding a hint of elegance." After all, wide-leg jeans are a fashion statement unto themselves, which means your shoes should complement, not compete with them.

Although fitted denim has become less trendy, for many Millennials, the style remains a popular option for spring. 

Switching up your footwear is an easy way to style skinny jeans so they don't look outdated. Add a pair of trendy loafers to make them look fresh with a fun statement sock for a pop of color. Or reach for knee-high boots that will give even the most urban outfits an equestrian edge. The beauty of skinny jeans is how neatly they tuck inside your boot, which means your footwear takes center stage.

Cuffed jeans are a great opportunity for a statement shoe since the higher, rolled hem means your footwear is on display. "Cuffed jeans end at the ankle and footwear can make or break the whole look," explains Albert Varkki. "A sculptural heel sandal can help you keep things modern." One neutral option is Gorfen Women's Kitten Heel in Black. But that doesn't mean you're stuck waiting for sandal-friendly warm weather to break out the cuffed denim. Varkki recommends a fun ankle boot for anyone seeking a closed-toe option. You can find  Just whatever you do? Stay away from chunky sneakers. "They can make the outfit look imbalanced," says Varkki.

With jean shorts, the name of the game is playful — and you're best off selecting a shoe that contrasts with the casualness of the denim cutoffs themselves. According to Albert Varkki, this means you should avoid defaulting to basic flip flops, which risk looking unimaginative and even frumpy.

Instead, reach footwear that has more distinct detail to give your look more intention. Jorts or jean shorts can evolve into a stylish fit if paired with the right footwear," they said. "A strappy gladiator sandal will refine the look, while wooden clogs will add a retro vibe."
