Teen Natalie From Yellowjackets Is So Gorgeous In Real Life
Sophie Thatcher proves that even surviving the wilderness can look cool with her "Yellowjackets" character Natalie Scatorccio. And without the dirt and blood, the actor is even more gorgeous in real life. The Chicago native plays a headstrong goth kid with a troubled upbringing in the Showtime series, with Juliette Lewis taking on the adult version of the character.
Thatcher shares some real-life similarities with Nat, managing to be just as edgy and cool as her on-screen counterpart, while also being a talented scream queen and a gorgeous style icon. "Playing Natalie for years, it's interesting how it psychologically affects you and how Natalie is similar to me in some ways, but also very different," Thatcher told Elle. "It's an escape, but then it's also facing yourself head on. Natalie is bleeding into me to some extent."
Though she's most known for her "Yellowjackets" role, Thatcher started acting in theater productions at 10 years old, and made her first TV appearance on "Chicago P.D." at age 16. She starred alongside Pedro Pascal in the sci-fi western "Prospect" in 2018, and later appeared in shows "Chicago Med" and "When the Streetlights Go On." Since landing the role of Natalie in 2021, Thatcher has cemented herself as a scream queen by headlining horror films like "The Boogeyman," "Heretic," and "Companion." But the actor isn't limiting herself to the genre. "I don't want to be restricted to one thing because nobody wants to be put in a box and I just want to explore everything." she told i-D.
Sophie's own style influenced Nat's iconic blonde look
A scroll through Sophie Thatcher's Instagram page shows that the star's style ranges from grunge-inspired and thrift-shop eclectic to luxury chic and soft vintage glam. While she clearly has a multi-faceted fashion sense, it's her edgy and alternative style that influenced parts of Natalie's iconic "Yellowjackets" look. "When we first shot the pilot, I just happened to have a bleach-blonde shag, and [the show's crew] thought it worked [for the character]," she told Allure.
In between shooting the first episode and the series being picked up by the network, Thatcher dyed her hair brown for another role. When it came time to resume filming for Season 1 of "Yellowjackets," the actor's tresses were unfortunately not up for the trip back to blonde. "It was already a super shag, so it wasn't really thick enough to bleach," she said, explaining that her hair was "in bad condition." Thatcher and the crew resorted to hair extensions and eventually a wig to maintain the trendy shag haircut and iconic bleach blonde color established in the pilot.
While Thatcher's grunge, '90s-esque style has influenced some of her characters, the "Prospect" star has revealed her desire to mix things up when it comes to the aesthetics of her on-screen roles. "I kind of want to explore stuff that's away from my own personal style," she told L'Officel. "Because I think that is, you know, getting further into characters and letting myself go and letting my own ego go."
Sophie Thatcher looked amazing in Valentino
While there is definitely overlap between Sophie Thatcher's personal style and her "Yellowjackets" looks, the Chicago native also rocks aesthetics that fall outside of Natalie's wheelhouse. One stunning example comes from the Valentino Fall 2025 Ready-to-Wear Show, when the actor wore a sheer, sparkly dress featuring a ruffled bib and elbow-length sleeves. "I have a contract with Valentino and I think it's a really good fit," she told Dazed. "It's doing something different but also very classic, very 60s and eclectic. The red carpet looks are never safe. I think [Alessandro Michele] and I have very similar tastes, so it's perfect."
Instead of bleach blonde, Thatcher, who belongs on our list of celebrity Libras who perfectly embody their signs, wore her shag-mullet hairstyle in a brunette color, styling it with effortless texture and messy bangs. Rounding out the romantic and vintage vibe of the ensemble, she opted for a mod-inspired beauty look. "I don't usually do this, but having the whites in the eyes where it's very '60s, but also kind of Japanese, kind of anime, in a way," the star told WWD while getting ready. While the whimsy and sparkle is far from the grunge aesthetic of her "Yellowjackets" character, Thatcher pulls off this classic-inspired look with ease and confidence.
