Fashion icon Zendaya has rocked some gorgeous hair looks throughout her career, ranging from unapologetic dreadlocks to striking red waves. But through it all, her natural curly hair remains one of our all-time favorite looks, with the star deservedly landing on our list of celebs who look gorgeous with their natural hair. Still, Zendaya hasn't always been a fan of the texture, she said while opening up about her hair-centered love journey.
"When I was younger, I went through a phase when I didn't like my hair," she told The Cut. "Because the school I went to was primarily Caucasian, there wasn't anyone who had my hair texture ... It took me a while to appreciate the hair that I have and find it beautiful." The "Challengers" star has now reached a place where she can embrace her textured hair, sharing casual snapshots on Instagram or wearing versions of her natural curls on "Euphoria." The process of keeping her mane healthy, though, is another story entirely.
Zendaya has experienced damage to her natural curls
Zendaya is stunning when sporting her naturally textured hair, but those who have had to combat common curly hair problems know that the process of keeping ringlets healthy can be intense. In fact, the California native has revealed that her hair has taken some damage over the years. "On the first season of the Disney Channel's 'Shake It Up,' heat-styling destroyed my hair," she told People. "I was only 14 years old, and I didn't know how to protect my hair, so it took over two years to grow it back, which really sucked!"
Since then, Zendaya has partnered with brands like CHI to promote healthy hair care, specifically name-checking the company's Argan Oil plus Moringa Oil Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as its Argan Oil Rejuvenating Masque. "I like to wear my hair natural because I like to stay away from heat products," she said in her interview with The Cut. "I use wigs and clip-ins and then I can go to town with anything I want. But it's also important to use proper protective sprays, styling creams, everything like that."
As for other tips and tricks, the "Dune" actor recommends using oil-based shampoo and conditioner, hydrating your hair with something like coconut oil, and getting monthly trims. With the amount of care Zendaya takes with her locks, it's no wonder she looks stunning rocking her natural curls.
