Ditch Your Jean Shorts This Summer For A Trendy Alternative

Denim cutoffs say summertime like fireworks and ice cream cones. But while we might love this classic look, it's not the most polished style choice. Even more annoying? Jean shorts often aren't very comfortable. That's why the current influx of elevated shorts made in lightweight cotton or linen is such a welcome warm-weather trend. These Bermuda-esque shorts have a trouser shape, but the more structured silhouette is offset with comfortable, easy-going fabrics, so they look polished and feel great.

"For 2025, we are seeing more tailored options as well as a good mix of dressier options and casual options," says Katie Schuppler, founder of KS Style Consulting, in an exclusive chat with Women.com. These slouchy shorts run longer than other short styles so that they hit a little above the knee, and often feature volume and pleats for ease of movement. "There are also more fashion-forward looks with stitching details, pocket styles, and distressing on certain styles."

Trendy tips to style your summer shorts

Don't be intimidated by the bulkier silhouette of these shorts. There are plenty of Bermuda short looks for summer that are far from frumpy. They pair well with just about any of the hottest fashion trends for 2025, from contrasting jackets to menswear. Commit to the slouchy, tailored look by throwing on an oversized button-down, or opt for something a bit more contrasting. "Styling Bermuda shorts with a cropped tee or top or a bodysuit and a wedge or platform sandal will definitely modernize this trend comeback," explains Katie Schuppler. Thicker fabrics like wool or twill will enhance the structured look of these shorts, but Schuppler also recommends crepe fabrics or linen if you want to look polished and fashion-forward.

But if you can't bring yourself to part with your beloved denim shorts, fear not. These Bermuda shorts are available in jean material, too — in fact, they're one of the denim trends you'll be seeing everywhere in 2025.
