How To Stay Calm And Healthy During Quarantine

Let's be honest, this quarantine threw us all for a curveball. It seems as if before the coronavirus a.k.a. COVID-19 showed up, we were all finally getting our lives together. If there's one thing we know about life is that it's unpredictable. This is just another roadblock we have to maneuver through.

It's important now more than ever to put our physical and mental health above all. Since self-isolation has given us all the time in the world, put that time toward something positive! Although it can be easy to slip into negativity, you have the power to fight it.

You can make these simple changes to your quarantine routine today. With doing things like eating healthy, reading, and spending time outside, isolation can become rewarding.

1. Exercise

Those of us who are loyal to our gym memberships probably weren't too happy when we learned they would be closing indefinitely. Many of us rely on daily exercise not just for our bodies, but for our minds. Working out can relieve stress, help you sleep, and boost your mood among many other things. It's also been shown to boost your immune system.

Although we've been deprived of the gym, no one said we couldn't stay on top of our workout routine at home. You can do body weight exercises and yoga at home with no equipment whatsoever. However, if you do have things at home like dumbbells or resistance bands, you can have more fun with it!

2. Read

In a world where social media is such a key factor in our lives, it can be easy to get caught up in it. However, it's important to not lose sight of all the other ways we can stay busy, like reading.

Finding a good book to read during this quarantine will be one of the best things you can do for yourself. You'll rediscover your passion for learning when you find a new book that excites you. Even if you're not into novels, you can benefit just as much from reading a magazine or newspaper. Reading anything but your screen for a while will be good for your health.

3. Meditate

If you already practice meditation, you know how useful it can be during this quarantine. Meditating can reduce stress and anxiety levels, increase your self-awareness, and improve many other aspects of your mental and physical health.

If you are new to meditation, there are plenty of tools out there to help you get started. Invest in a book or an app to walk you through the process. Many people love to use the free Headspace app for its guided meditations. Taking up meditation will give you a new way to spend your free time while enhancing various areas of your life.

4. Eat Well

Let's be real, while we're stuck inside with our boredom and a full pantry, eating junk food sounds more appealing than ever. For some reason it just feels socially acceptable to lay in bed and devour snacks and sweets all day. You should still be able to enjoy your favorite unhealthy foods in moderation, but you shouldn't use quarantine as an excuse to take it overboard.

It's important to consume fruits and vegetables throughout the day in order to give our bodies the proper nutrition it needs. If you want your immune system to have a chance at defending itself against the virus, it needs to be functional. Eating fruits and veggies can promote a working immune system. Plus, they will give you energy as opposed to processed foods which will make you feel more lethargic.

5. Go Outside

Just because you're in isolation, it doesn't mean you physically need to stay indoors. You can still take a walk around your neighborhood, which will give you fresh air and get your body moving.

If you have a backyard, you've already got it better than most people. Your body will thank you for spending time in your yard whether it's reading a book, gardening, or even just relaxing. If you don't have a yard hopefully you have a balcony where you soak up the sun instead. A change of scenery will definitely be good for you!

6. Have Good Hygiene

It might sound obvious to some, but to others, keeping good hygiene during quarantine has been put on the back burner. It's hard to imagine why you should shower and get dressed each day if no one will see you. However, don't forget you have to see yourself!

Practicing good hygiene will help you keep your normal routine as much as possible. You'll feel much better about yourself if you're acting as humanly as possible. You don't even have to put on nice clothes, but simply changing out of your pajama's into something new but just as comfortable will do the trick.
