The Bachelorette's Garrett Yrigoyen Hateful Instagram Likes Revealed by The Bachelor's Ashley Spivey
The Bachelorette season 14 has only begun with 28 bachelors vying for Becca Kufrin's heart on the ABC hit reality show. However, there's already controversy around frontrunner Garrett Yrigoyen, who reportedly liked numerous hateful and problematic posts on his Instagram account. Former Bachelor contestant Ashley Spivey uncovered offensive posts liked by Yrigoyen, including memes that mocked Parkland shooting survivors, transgendered people, and immigrants.
The news comes after Yrigoyen was given the first impression rose in the premiere as well as spoilers and photos leaking that Yrigoyen is likely the winner of Becca's Bachelorette season. So, what exactly did Garrett do and what does Becca have to say about the social media mess? And will the events that happen in the present affect the outcome of the show, which was filmed in advance?
Welp I meant to post this earlier but I was on a flight and just bad at this whole social media thing. BUT - Before you all join me in watching the beginning of my love story tonight, I want to take a second to give thanks. Thank you to everyone for all of the love, support and kind words that I’ve received over the past year. It fills my heart in places that I didn’t even know existed. I also want to ask that you keep an open heart in watching this all unfold. 28 guys came on this journey with me from all across the country and laid their hearts on the line for a chance at love. There are many different personalities, interests and perspectives, but every man deserves to feel the same support and openness that I’ve received over the past few months. It’s not an easy thing to do, to give up your life and put everything on display, especially in this social climate. But these men were brave enough to do that with me, and that’s something truly special. To the 28 of you who went through this crazy journey with me - thank you. You all added to my story in some way. You taught me about yourselves and even about myself along the way. I think it’s safe to say (one last time) that we did the damn thing together. I also want to thank the entire production team and crew. Each and every one of you is driven and kind, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of your hard work. It doesn’t go unnoticed, so thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for reading this novel, I vow to never write this long of a post again. NOW LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED! 🌹
Ashley Spivey Exposes Garrett Yrigoyen
Since the news broke out to the public, Yrigoyen has deleted his Instagram account. However, Spivey captured a few of photos allegedly liked by Yrigoyen.
"Can we do a better job of social media deep dives on the dudes that try out for #thebachelorette - FYI douchebags we can see your likes," Spivey wrote. "A contestant on this season of #thebachelorette liked all of these posts on Instagram and I’m thinking it will be very hard to pull for the type of person likes any of this."
A contestant on this season of #thebachelorette liked all of these posts on Instagram and I’m thinking it will be very hard to pull for the type of person likes any of this. The pics this dude liked are as follows:— Ashley Spivey (@AshleySpivey) May 24, 2018
Spivey listed the problematic photos, each with Yrigoyen’s Instagram handle clearly displayed among the name of likes on the post.
One post referred to David Hogg, a survivor of the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, as a "crisis actor."
Other posts targeted the transgendered community. One post mocked Caitlyn Jenner's transition and another one called out young transgendered boys.
Yrigoyen also liked photos mocking feminists and memes that joked about violence towards undocumented immigrants.
And the list continues. For the full thread, head over to Ashley Spivey's Twitter feed.
While we're obviously disappointed by this news, this kind of social media activity is particularly shocking to Bachelorette fans considering Yrigoyen is trying to start a relationship with (and potentially marry) Becca Kufrin, who has openly Hillary Clinton and the Women's March.
So, will ABC change the outcome of the Bachelorette finale if the rumors are true that Garrett is the winner? It looks like Kufrin has finally addressed Yrigoyen's Instagram likes in an interview with E! news.
"I've heard a little bit about it these past couple days," she said in regards to the controversy surrounding Garrett. "I've just been so busy traveling around the country with press that I haven't really been able to read too much up on it, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and at the end of the day I wanted to go on this journey to open up myself and have people see my love story unfold and I would hope that they would stay open and respect me but also stay open and respect these 28 guys that went along on the journey with me."
So, it appears that Kufrin wasn't allowed to have access to social media stalk her contestants during filming.
"People form their own opinions, but at the end of the day, I know who I am and my friends and family know the type of person who I am, and I can only hope the guys feel that same way," Kufrin said. "It's going to be tough. I think social media is a huge presence in our lives these days. There's no getting around that fact. It's difficult for people to say certain things about any of these guys, and so I would really just hope that they watch the entire journey and get to know them for who they really are."
We're not sure that her answer will satisfy fans. She did address the scandal, but it was ultimately a political answer. What does this mean for the rest of The Bachelorette? Will Garrett get a "villian's edit" now that social media has played part in the real world? Will Becca choose Garrett in the end? Stay tuned.
