Nothing can replace the convenience of online shopping, and since March of 2020, it has become normal for many Americans to buy their clothes, groceries, and other necessities over the internet. However, buying clothes online comes with a risk; since I can’t see the clothes in person, I sometimes struggle to determine the quality of a product or if it will fit me. However, once I learned how to find clothes in the right size online, I’ve become more confident in purchasing clothes from online shops without wishing for a fitting room.
Use a Tape Measure
One of the biggest problems with shopping for clothes online is that sizes change from company to company. A medium for one brand might be equivalent to an extra-small at another, so you shouldn’t rely on conventional sizing when picking out clothes.
Instead, I use a flexible tape measure, similar to one a tailor would use, to get an accurate reading of my sizes. Measuring guides online can help you to do this. Also, make sure to wear undergarments or tights when doing this because the extra material from baggy clothes will add a few inches, creating an inaccurate reading.
Check the Website’s Size Charts
Once I have my body’s measurements in inches or centimeters, I can check the website I’m shopping at for a size chart. These size charts will give accurate readings for how their sizes fit. This way, I don’t have to worry about a company’s interpretation of the size being different from mine.
The Differences Between You and the Model
While looking at how the clothes fit on a model can give you an idea of how you’ll look, the pictures don’t tell the whole story. Not everyone looks like a model, so our natural curves or height will make the clothes fit differently on us. By understanding our differences, I can focus on our similarities to get a snapshot of how I’d look in the fit. Some sites have even begun including the height and size of their models to help you make your own interpretations.

The best tip I’ve gotten for online shopping is to listen to my fellow shoppers. The reviews for a product will typically have feedback on how the clothes fit, their quality, and the accuracy of the descriptions. Since reviews have nothing to gain from the purchase, I can count on them to be open and honest about the clothes I’m looking at purchasing.
