The Fob, Or Fringe Bob, Is 2024's Most Iconic Short Hair Look
If you've been keeping your eye on the hot hair trends of 2024 so far, then you likely already know that bobs and bangs are officially in. From short and boxy styles to Jane Birkin-inspired wisps, fringe is really having a moment. But there's a fresh new trend on the scene that's combining the two. Yep, the fob is officially here and gracing the heads of the most stylish people around the globe. Actress and model Taylor Russell has pretty much made it her signature hair. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez, rocked a glam version of the look with a bow in her "Love On" music video. To really be on trend though, we'd recommend rocking fuller bangs with this look rather than anything too barely-there or something like curtain bangs.
Of course, we totally get the apprehension around the look. Straight-across bangs can seem super intimidating, as is a super short cut. However, plenty of folks online are proving that this ultra-chic, French haircut is easier to pull off than you think. Even better, there are so many different ways to sport this sophisticated style.
Bring the volume
You'd be forgiven for thinking a fob wouldn't bring much volume to your locks, but it certainly can — if you get the cut right. The blunter your cut, the better when you're looking to get some fullness out of your shorter 'do, as it will instantly add volume. Your hair won't be so weighed down and it will also be healthier, as you'll be chopping off things like drab and thin split ends.
Embrace your natural texture
Don't think that fobs have to be straight and sleek to be stylish. A rounded cut with some natural curls is absolutely gorgeous, creating a voluminous, yet poof-free style. For those who have noticed their hair is a bit limp or weighed down, this can be great way to bring the bounce back into your spirals. We love the way curls naturally fall over the forehead to create cascading bangs.
Make it round
If the straight across fringe bob is too Edna Mode for you, opt for a rounder cut. Ask for graduated layers on either side of your bangs so that they're shorter in the middle and slightly longer either side. This will keep your look from being too boxy (which isn't the most flattering on everyone). Keep in mind, though, if you have a slightly rounder face, you may want to try something more blunt, as rounder styles can really accentuate the roundness of the face.
Go super short
A bangin' bob that hits just above the chin, complete with super short fringe, will give you that classic French bob look (and, subsequently, French girl aesthetic). You have to be feeling bold to go this short, but it's perfect if you're ready for something a little more dramatic.
Try super blunt bangs
There's a reason why the straight-across fringe bob a la "Pulp Fiction's" Mia Wallace is replicated to this day. Blunt bangs create a sharper line on the forehead where your bangs meet the main part of your hair, forming an angle that will make your look super sharp and chic. And while we appreciated how a rounded version of this look with layers can soften the face, the blunt cut can actually bring out the angles in your face, making it appear less round. This is also the classic way to rock a bob, so going with it will give you a timeless edge.
