Blurred Lip Looks Are The Grungiest Makeup Trend Of Summer 2024
For so long, it's felt like overlining has been the only way to do a lip look (thanks, Kylie Jenner). But there's a new trend for 2024 — and it involves ditching the dark lip liner. We're talking about blurred lips, and it's all about having the most color on the inside of the lips for a grungy twist on your usual makeup. We know that sounds like it goes against everything we've been told, but trust us. Trust TikTok too, because "Blurred Lips" has more than 135 million posts, while the alternate term for the look, "Blotted Lips," has over 12 million.
The reason it's called blurred is because, by focusing the majority of the color on the inner part of your mouth, you're essentially creating a faded effect that diffuses as it goes out. Think of blurred lips, which originated in Korea, as a reversed version of the ombre lips trend that's also hot for 2024, where the color fades from dark on the outside into light on the inside. The finished blurred lip is softer and gentler than the heavier lip liner styles we've seen lately. Chanel makeup artist Marco Antonio even recommended softening the edges when giving this look a go to Who What Wear. "[Use] a cotton bud or a clean brush, making the transition from the lipstick to your skin seamless," they shared. But that's not the only tip to help you nail this look.
Apply a nude matte shade under a matte red
To give one of the most popular blurred lip methods a go, apply a matte nude liquid lipstick all over your lips and create that blurred effect by spreading it across your lips with your finger. Then, apply a red matte liquid lipstick in the center only, making sure to steer clear of the edges of your lips. After that, use a Q-Tip to blend the two together. Once you've got that super soft look, you're ready to go!
A glossy blurred lip is one of the easiest ways to take on the trend
If you're struggling to get that super soft, diffused effect when trying the blurred lip trend, then add a gloss. By applying a lip gloss over your two lipsticks, it will instantly help blur the two together and get rid of any harsh lines. Of course, the kind of gloss you go for is totally down to your personal preference, though stick to something clear or a lighter shade, as you don't want to be adding darkness to the outer lip.
A tinted lip balm will give an extra diffused blurred lip look
Don't be fooled into thinking you can only try blurred lips with lipsticks. It's possible to try this trend with tinted lip balm — and it will actually give your makeup a softer appearance. Apply the balm using a brush and focus the color on the inner part of your lips. Once the majority of the product is gone, diffuse it out using either the brush or your fingers. Not only will the result be gorgeous, but you'll also be hydrating your lips at the same time. Win-win!
Use concealer or pale lip liner to create more of a blur
To get that extra bit of contrast between your inner and outer lips, another step to add to your routine is concealer or a super light lip liner. By gently applying it around the outside of the mouth and blending it, you'll create an even softer effect that you'll get naturally. Just remember to keep them to a minimum and really blend, as this trend really isn't about harsh lines or sharp contrasts. After all, this is no dark and moody lip.
