Overalls Are The Denim Trend That's Hailey Bieber-Approved

Hailey Bieber has one of the most stunning style transformations ever, so whenever she shows us a new fashion trend, we're instantly on-board. In July 2024, the beauty wore one of the hottest looks of the moment in a Instagram selfie; denim overalls. She paired her rolled-down one-piece with a white tee and red hat for a casual, easy to wear look. The blue number was very similar to one she wore with a baseball cap on Instagram two months earlier. But Bieber's hardly the only celebrity who knows how trendy denim overalls are. Sarah Jessica Parker wore a paint-splattered pair to shoot "And Just Like That," Kendall Jenner rocked white denim overalls on Instagram, and Olivia Wilde wowed in a dark pair during a day out with her kids. But why are they so hot? According to Joseph Katz, Hollywood fashion stylist and media contributor, it's an extension of the summer 2023 return of the grungy 90's aesthetic, driven by Gen Z. "The younger generation on social like to like to push boundaries and pull thing that were not as cool and style them differently and make them cool again," he said. And, of course, comfort plays a part. "Comfort is key in fashion," Katz shared. "[Overalls are] comfortable and relaxed." Before you slip into your cool denim ensemble though, we've got the style tips you need.

Though a classic white tee may be the traditional denim overalls pairing, Joseph Katz suggested something more colorful for a more contemporary feel. "[Pieces] that are so dated can be refreshed and renewed when they are styled different," he explained. "One of my favorite ways to style them is with a pop of color underneath." To really think outside the box, a chunky, bright red sweater can breathe fresh air into a denim one-piece. You could also try this modern twist by following Hailey Bieber's lead with a quirky, bright hat.

Joseph Katz suggested to us wearing a more delicate blouse under your denim overalls. "I love to match overalls with a blouse with puff sleeves, which really shows how two opposites traditional denim with a dressy blouse work so well together," he said. This pairing also gives us Coquette Cowgirl vibes, another big trend for 2024, and it'll make your look dressier. Granted, denim overalls aren't ever going to be formal outfits, but a stylish blouse will make them more appropriate for things like family gatherings or lunch dates.

Denim overalls aren't known for their sophistication, but adding a tailored blazer will instantly upgrade the garment. "A blazer and heels with your overalls is another fun way to create a whole new fresh look. Typically, you would not think of adding a blazer to something so casual but it can create a chic look," Joseph Katz said. If your workplace has a more casual dress code, this look could work in the office, especially if you keep your accessories dark or neutral. Add a colorful blazer instead for a fun shopping ensemble.

Another way to style denim overalls is to put the focus on your accessories. Joseph Katz told us that layered necklaces and bracelets can make the throwback trend feel more contemporary. To nail multiple trends, Katz broke down the best summer jewelery trends, including statement necklaces and chunky bangles. He also recommended finishing your overalls look with retro sunglasses (ironically, throwback sunnies are super trendy!) If they're not for you though, there are several other hot sunglasses trends in 2024 to choose from. Putting your overalls with these bold accessories makes a fun vacation look.

Chic Western-inspired fashion is another trend to watch for fall 2024, so the country aesthetic clearly isn't going anywhere. Cowboy boots have been trending since fall 2023 and beyond, and they lend themselves perfectly to denim overalls for a practical, cowgirl aesthetic. To make this style a little more fashion-forward, try white overalls with white boots and a metallic top. This will make your ensemble more appropriate for a night out with the girls, and it'll help you avoid falling into the trap of looking dated.
