The Winter 2024/2025 Haircut Trends You'll Be Seeing Everywhere

As those colder days and longer nights roll in, it can be hard to know what to do with our hair. Do we embrace a longer cut to keep ourselves warm? Do we use a shorter, curly cut to keep things chic and simple? Or is something in between the perfect go-to?

But it's not only length we have to think about. It's just as important to know we're rocking trendy cuts that keep us stylish as we enter a new year. Though 2024 brought trendy haircuts our way (everything from the short, French bob, to long bangs, and grungy cuts were hot), things look a little different as we close out the year and welcome a new one. To learn more about the cuts we'll be seeing everywhere, we asked Wahl Pro educator Munny Thapar to break down the hottest trends that'll have you proudly declaring, 'New year, new 'do.'

The textured shag

Shag haircuts have been trendy for a while — and the look shows no signs of slowing down as 2024 transforms into 2025. We've already seen the likes of Ciara, Billie Eilish, and Jenna Ortega rock this undone style, which involves choppy layers and bangs. And it sounds like we should expect more celebs to hop on the shag train. According to Munny Thaper, the latest iteration has a more modern twist. "Shags remain popular for their edgy, layered structure and ability to work across all hair types. For winter, the shag might feature softer layering to balance volume with warmth," she shared.

The important thing to remember is that it's not one size fits all with the textured shag. Celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak told Refinery29 that the best version for you will depend on your tresses. "It's really about working with the natural texture and shape of the hair. You can have long hair or you can have hair above the shoulders — it should be tailored to each person," she said. Natural curls will really work with this cut, but if you have straighter locks, ask for more subtle layers or use this hair stylist trick for getting voluminous curls to create some movement.

The curly bob with tapered layers

If you naturally have curly or textured locks, then try the curly bob with tapered layers (that means layers that get gradually change length). Not only does it look great, it's practical for the colder months. "This cut accentuates natural curls and textured hair while providing easy-to-maintain volume and movement," Munny Thaper told Women.com. "[It's] great for the winter season giving a very warm and playful vibe to the hair, even if we're wearing winter gear," she added. So this is the perfect style for curly beauties who don't have time to constantly style their tresses (or just don't want to). It's also easy to zhuzh so you can easily tame unsightly hat hair this winter.

While curly bobs may seem limiting, a tapered version does still offer styling options for those who like to change things up. You can still amp up the volume for a fun night with the girls or slick it down for a sultry date night.

Low taper with longer lengths

Low taper tresses (where the hair is longer at the top but gradually gets shorter) with longer lengths are ideal for those who rocked a shorter 'do in the summer, but are looking to go in another direction for winter. "The low taper is a great way to transition into longer looks that will keep you warmer through the cold months as well as being a versatile style that can be easily maintained," Munny Thaper said. "This is one of my personal favorites to do and [I love] the look of the cut."

The low taper twist refers to the hair being super short at the nape of the neck, so ask your hairdresser to create the look as low as possible to be on trend. This will help create more volume at the roots and allow for more movement and texture on top. Just don't get a taper confused with a fade. A fade is a shorter version of the hairstyle, whereas this look is more about length.

The bell-bottom bob

It wouldn't be a hair trend roundup without the mention of a bob, and, for winter 2024/2025 we'll be all in on the bell bottom. The flirty bell-bottom bob has been trending since the summer, and the flippy hair trend is a favorite of Gigi Hadid so you know it's good. To get the look, ask your hairdresser for a classic, blunt bob, but ensure there's a little extra length. We'd recommend a shoulder-skimming style because it involves literally flipping out the ends with a round brush, straighteners, or curling wand to get a shape reminiscent of a bell (that's how it got its name, of course). So you don't want it too short.

Though the cut itself is low-maintenance, this trend is all in the styling, so you'll probably have to tend to your tresses each day. That shouldn't take long because of the length, but applying heat protectant in the right way will be super important. "Smooth the hair then before you get to the ends, curve the tool in an upwards motion to get that flick at the ends," session stylist and BaByliss ambassador, Syd Hayes, recommended to Who What Wear.

Braids

Another way to be on trend is to opt for braids. "Braids are a protective style which is great for the winter season due to the cold weather. Braids are also a great way to have a stylish look and prevent breakage," Munny Thaper explained. After all, the cold can have more of an effect on our hair than we realize. Not only can it dry out our tresses, but constantly wearing hats and festive accessories can spell serious damage. But, fortunately, braids make for a top-notch winter style that still looks good with a hat while helping to keep the hair healthier.

Though braids are trending in winter 2024/2025 for everyone, for those who can grow them, Thaper recommended adding a tapered beard for a super modern look. "Having a full beard with braids creates such a fun look that is pleasing to the eye," she said. "Because of the intricacies of the braids and the thickness of the beard a low taper provides just the perfect amount of balance between the two strong looks." However, no beard is necessary to rock a beautiful braid.
