Inappropriate Outfits Celebs Showed Up To Other People's Weddings In

Dressing for a wedding can be hard. There's a long list of wedding dress codes to abide by, an almost blanket ban on white outfits, and the tough job of matching the formality (or lack thereof) of the event. Then there's the minefield of avoiding colors that are too similar to the bridesmaid's ensembles, plus abiding by unwritten rules on how plunging your neckline can be. Yeah, outfit shopping to see two people exchange vows can be a total nightmare.

But don't worry if you've got it wrong. Despite their millions of dollars, access to the biggest designers in the world, and the help of a team of stylists, even some of our favorite celebrities haven't mastered the art of wedding guest dressing. In fact, usually on-point fashionistas like Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Sophie Turner have all been accused of dressing downright inappropriately for other people's big days.

Hailey Bieber's risqué cut-out gown looked white in photos

Hailey Bieber made a major wedding fashion faux pas in 2023 when she attended Kim Kardashian's former assistant Stephanie Shepherd's nuptials with Larry Jackson in a blue gown so light it looked white in pictures. Of course, white is the main color to avoid wearing to someone else's wedding (unless you're asked to by the couple). The backless number featured a high neck with long sleeves that looked stunning on the beauty mogul, but, at first glance, it looked far too much like a wedding dress. Though Bieber attempted to match the gown to her blue, fluffy bag and eyeshadow, the pigment only made the garment look lighter. "You can say pale blue but pale blue is your bag its white dress with slightly blue [hue]. I'm disappointed because you can't do this to your friend," one person commented on her Instagram upload.

Other social media users were more focused on the large cut-out that exposed her back and stretched to her front, showing she wasn't wearing a traditional bra. "The main thing here is what she's wearing... wayyyy too risqué...and not appropriate at all!" another Instagram user wrote. After years of rubbing shoulders with the Kardashians, we're sure Shepherd is used to fashion-forward, skin-baring dresses. However, as a guest, it's best to err on the side of caution with provocative clothing to keep the focus on the couple.

Kylie Jenner was accused of trying to upstage Hailey Bieber when she married Justin Bieber

Something that made Hailey Bieber's dress choice even stranger? She knew how it felt to have someone accused of trying to upstage the bride at her own event. Kylie Jenner felt the wrath of the Beliebers when she attended the model and Justin Bieber's 2019 wedding in a very bold, gold gown that served major main character energy. The one shoulder, metallic J'Aton Couture dress showed plenty of leg and featured a torso cut-out with a long, statement making train. She accessorized with a butterfly bag featuring a gold chain.

"Are you out of your mind? Why on earth would you wear that as a GUEST at a WEDDING?" one fan commented on Jenner's Instagram upload, suggesting the look was too attention grabbing. "Imagine someone [walked] up to your wedding dressed like this ? id call the police," another wrote alongside three crying laughing emoji. Though "The Kardashians" star certainly looked gorgeous and glamorous, the shiny number was too over-the-top when the attention was supposed to be on the Biebers.

Sophie Turner's fashion emergency created a footwear faux pas

There are several shoes you should think twice about for a wedding, and thigh-high boots are one of them — especially in the summer. But a fashion emergency in 2018 meant "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner had no choice when she attended her co-stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie's big day. The beauty paired a matte black, block heel pair with a short, red blazer dress, black top, red sunglasses, plus a black-and-white bag. The problem? The outfit was more fit for a nightclub than a sophisticated celebrity wedding. Though super tall boots can be fashionable (they were a huge trend during London Fashion Week S/S '24), they can give the wrong impression. The footwear has a reputation for being too provocative for formal events, and we can only imagine how warm the actor's feet and legs were considering the nuptials happened in late June.

Turner told Elle U.K. two years later she never intended to wear the shoes to the event, but had to because it was out of town and the two more elegant outfits she had didn't fit. "It was either the thigh-high boots or these nice heels but I felt like if I just wore the heels all of my leg is showing, if I cover up a little bit then... urgh, it was a disaster. Worst fashion choice," she said. It was clear at the time Turner wasn't comfortable in the short number, as she pulled down the blazer as she walked which made for some awkward snaps.

Cara Delevingne ignored royal protocol and Princess Eugenie's initial wishes

The royal family have worn some beyond controversial outfits, but nothing quite as dramatic as Cara Delevingne's for the wedding of Princess Eugenie (William, Princes of Wales, and Harry, Duke of Sussex's cousin) and Jack Brooksbank. Eugenie's invitation specifically asked male guests to wear a morning coat and women to opt for a day dress and hat, which is standard for such royal events. Etiquette expert Myka Meier also told Town & Country that color is usually encouraged for royal weddings, noting, "Black is internationally a color of mourning." Though the "Suicide Squad" star clearly understood the formal requirement, she raised eyebrows by ignoring the other dress code requests in her black suit, top hat, tie, and heels.

Delevingne told Grazia she contacted Eugenie first and claimed King Charles' niece was okay with her choice. "Eugenie has been a friend of mine since I was a kid and I've always wanted to wear tails. I texted her, as I wasn't sure about it and she was like: 'Of course, I expected nothing else from you!,'" she said (via Hello!). "I found it interesting how many people came up to me and said: 'You're so brave to wear that!' I was like, really? I feel way more comfortable like this." Though we can't fault Delevingne for dressing authentically for her personality, a less formal and not so high-profile affair would have been the place to bend the rules. Her attire was highly talked about in fashion circles, which took attention away from the bride.

Dua Lipa wore a sheer, white gown to Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marco Maestri's big day

Dua Lipa was ahead of the sheer dress trend when she stepped out in a long, white number in 2022. Unfortunately, she wore it to the wrong event. The British pop star attended Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marco Maestri's big day in France in the see-through gown from Mugler (Porte Jacquemus' brand), which revealed her white briefs and made her look like the bride.

We understand why Lipa opted for a Porte Jacquemus-designed dress and wearing white isn't considered such bad etiquette when there isn't a bride, but this look didn't feel quite right. Having Dua Lipa at your big day is sure to cause enough of a stir, never mind having her there in an almost totally see-though number. Though other guests sported white as well (suggesting the couple asked them to) there would have been countless other Mugler numbers Lipa could have worn that wouldn't have stolen focus from the couple in such a daring way.
