Stars & Politicians Whose Outfits Totally Missed The Mark At Trump's Inauguration

All eyes were on Washington D.C. on January 20 as Donald Trump was inaugurated for his second term in office. But the 45th-turned-47th president of the United States wasn't center of attention the whole time, as the businessman played second fiddle to some interesting fashion choices.

Case and point? His wife Melania Trump, who has worn a few outfits that didn't work over the years. The first lady divided viewers as she strut into the Capitol Building's Rotunda in a statement-making, structured navy hat with a white stripe. The daring choice spawned countless memes. "Apparently while her husband was working at McDonald's Melania stole the Hamburglar's hat," one X, formerly known as Twitter, user quipped. Others were more complimentary of the bold accessory, which perfectly matched her double-breasted coat and cream scarf. "It is simultaneously serious and chic," an X user commented of her look. But there were other outfits on the historic day that were less divisive, because they clearly missed the mark.

Lauren Sanchez's lace top was too lingerie-esque for such a formal event

Lauren Sanchez seemed to have forgotten the gravitas of Donald Trump's inauguration. Sanchez's chic, all-white pantsuit worked, but the structured, white, lace top underneath didn't. The garment appeared to be lined over her chest but sheer elsewhere, which, although she kept her blazer fastened and lingerie as outwear had been trending, wasn't appropriate for such a formal, historic event. And we weren't the only ones who thought so. "Not proper attire to say the least," an X user wrote.

Senator John Fetterman looked totally out of place in shorts

We can't call out Lauren Sanchez's inauguration outfit without highlighting that Senator John Fetterman took in the prestigious event from the front row... in gym shorts. Despite the event moving inside because of frigid temperatures, the politician paired his informal bottoms with a black hoodie and sneakers so casual we're surprised he was even allowed inside. Though everyone should always feel free to dress in a way that feels comfortable, Fetterman took that too far and stood out (in a bad way) amidst the suave suits and gowns.

Jessica Ditzel's off-the-shoulder dress looked like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen

Jessica Ditzel wore a white, longsleeve dress to sit alongside her husband, Joe Rogan, but the ribbed number missed the mark. The off-the-shoulder look felt too laid-back for the political event and Ditzel seemingly risked a wardrobe malfunction as the neck was so wide. The dress plunged a little low for a formal yet chilly day in the capital, but could have been elevated if she'd swapped the thick, gaudy chain (big jewelry was in for 2023, but since faded away) for a more sophisticated, delicate necklace.

Miriam Adelson's coat gave us Sgt. Pepper vibes

Businessperson Miriam Adelson opted for a floor-length, military-style white coat that fastened down to her bellybutton, but remained open down her legs. Coupled with her signature tinted glasses, Adelson gave us The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" cosplay vibes. Though we appreciated her taking a risk, the out-there garment would have been more at home at a fashion show than an inauguration. The outerwear was also too distracting with Adelson's mustard clothing underneath, whereas black pants would have kept the look more neutral.

Kellyanne Conway's patriotic dress looked like a costume

Donald Trump's former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway dug out an interesting dress to address the president's supporters at Capital One Arena on Inauguration Day. She wore a red, white, and blue collared dress with gold tiger head embellishments that created two vertical lines over her torso. Though patriotic, the dress looked more like a costume we'd expect to see on The Rockettes during a Fourth of July performance than formal inauguration attire. Conway previously wore the Gucci garment in 2017 (and it didn't go down well on social media then, either).
