Romantic Hair Looks To Try This Valentine's Day
No matter if you've got a hot date, a Galentine's party with the girls, or a self-love night in planned for February 14, there's no denying it's fun to get dressed up for Valentine's Day. One of the simplest ways to get into the spirit is with a romantic hairstyle, which can be an easy, instant mood booster. But striking the right balance with our locks can be tough. V-day is all about looking and feeling sexy, but it's also about cozying up, feeling comfortable, and learning to love ourselves the way we are.
So, to make choosing the perfect holiday hairstyle easier, we brought in an expert. We put the knowledge of Savanna George-Newcomb, educator coach at Aveda Arts and Sciences Institutes Nashville, to the test, and she came through to deliver the best love day 'dos for all textures and lengths, no matter if you'd prefer to pick a pixie or fancy a French braid.
A textured, high bun
One of the ultimate romantic Valentine's Day hairstyles has to be a loose up-do with a few strands hanging down. It gives the best of both worlds, as it's obvious you've put some effort into tresses, but it's still got that sexy and ethereal, undone quality. "[It's] classically whimsical and romantic," Savanna George-Newcomb told us of the bridal-inspired updo. We'd recommend this to those who are used to wearing their tresses down, but want to try something dressier for the special occasion.
The easiest way to achieve a textured, high bun is by pinning sections to the head. "Depending on hair length and thickness, you can pin hair up in multiple knots and secure with hair pins and/or French pins. Then you can use an iron and thermal protection to enhance details around the hairline," George-Newcomb said. To create more texture, she recommended applying a texturizing spray, which will create sexy volume. "Or, to increase shine, [try] Aveda's Nutriplenish Multi Use Oil for added hydration," she said.
French braids with waves
French braids are incredibly romantic thanks to their association with fairytales and Regency era fashion — but they don't have to be outdated. A modern way to rock a braid is in a half-up, half-down style with loose curls or waves underneath, so it looks less 'done' while still remaining incredibly feminine.
One of our favorite ways to do braids for Valentine's Day is to go big and double up. To begin, curl the hair to create a soft wave (if you have natural curls, you can stick with your gorgeous texture) and separate it into three sections, two at the front and a larger piece at the back. Braid the front sections (which should be the same thickness) and fasten them at the back in the center of the head or lower to keep things low and casual. You could pin the braids or use a hair tie to connect them. Once fixed in place, gently pull each side of the to loosen it, similar to the bubble braid hack, for more texture and volume. Finish by brushing out the curls for a gorgeous half up, half down style that can take you from a romantic date to drinks with friends.
A tousled Pixie
As Teyana Taylor and several other celebrities know, a tousled pixie cut can be a stunning 'do for Valentine's Day. It's perfect if you don't want a cut that requires a lot of styling, and getting choppy layers allows for tousling to create a messy, lived vibe. "Adding additional texture and volume will help cater your overall look to your personality," Savanna George-Newcomb told us, as you could go totally wild or try something more demure based on your mood. We also love that it won't pull focus. Pixies are daring so they effortlessly exude confidence, but because it's so short, it won't cover your jaw-dropping V-Day outfit or makeup. That allows you more freedom to have fun with your cosmetics and clothing choices.
"This look can be achieved by using a crème, paste, or a dry spray like Air Control. Focus on using heat protection before drying. You can also increase the texture by utilizing an iron to kick out the ends," George-Newcomb shared.
A sexy, voluminous bob
Savanna George-Newcomb told us bouncy, voluminous hair is big for 2025 so not only will a voluminous bob have you looking fabulous as you celebrate the holiday, it'll have you on trend. "To achieve this, use a prep spray prior to using any heat on the hair. My favorite go to are metal rollers that you can set and dry using a diffuser or use a large barrel curling iron to create the bouncy curls," Savanna George-Newcomb said. "Once cooled, release and use a large comb or bristle brush to break up the curls and add volume," she added. You can also use a texturizing spray, such as Living Proof Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray or Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray, to add extra oomph without weighing your tresses down.
Try this if you love adding accessories to your locks, because it's perfect for a statement headband. You could also pull one side back and fix it in place with a pin for a chic, asymmetric style, or clip in small bows to show your V-Day love.
Diffused curls with movement
"[Diffused curls are] effervescent, romantic and free. All the characteristics to celebrate Valentine's Day," Savanna George-Newcomb exclusively told Women.com. These curls are sultry and undone, offering an alternative to an up-do or too perfect curls that can sometimes look juvenile. It's great for those who prefer their locks down as a safety net too, making it a must if you're planning a Valentine's Day date with a new partner and want a sense of familiarity, authenticity, and comfort.
If you already have curly or wavy locks, it's easy to achieve. "Start by using a prep spray such as Aveda Be Curly Advanced Curl Perfecting Primer to prep the hair for ultimate heat protection. Work a crème or a hold product into the hair prior to setting the curls," she said. For those who want to enhance their natural texture pattern, George-Newcomb recommended using the finger coil technique (which involves wrapping a strand around the finger from the end to the scalp, then letting it spring back) or pin the hair up. "To dry the set, use a diffuser or a bonnet attachment to completely dry the hair," she added.
