Celebrity Couples That Are Total 'Divorce Goals' (And Somehow Made That A Thing)
Forget couple goals. It's easy to thrive when everything is hunky dory in a romantic relationship, but it takes true maturity to stay on good terms with a former spouse following a breakup. Enter: divorce goals. Though some divorces fare better after a clean break (especially relationships involving any abuse or mistreatment), other times, it's fine to be friends with your former love. And some ex-celeb couples are experts in facilitating amicable vibes after a marriage has run its course. Some famous exes, like Amy Poehler and Will Arnett, ended up closer than when they were married.
The hilarious acting duo and parents of two married in 2003 but broke the comedy world's hearts when they announced their divorce in 2014. Arnett spoke about how difficult their breakup was in a 2022 The Guardian interview, confessing, "I was driving to the set one day and I pulled over to the side of the road and cried for an hour." Thankfully, the duo pushed past their heartbreak, and the "Arrested Development" star hinted they got closer post-split. "I'm so lucky that we're such a huge part of each other's lives, even more so than we were five years ago," he said. They got to such a good place that, in 2025, Arnett was on hand to help his ex launch her podcast. But they're not the only ones who made divorce goals a thing.
Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom
Miranda Kerr and ex-husband, Orlando Bloom, have been open about the importance of a healthy relationship post-divorce. Bloom's soon-to-be-wife Katy Perry and Miranda Kerr's Relationship is notoriously close, and the parenting group (including Kerr's husband Evan Spiegel)are experts in caring for Kerr and Bloom's son, Flynn.
The Australian native got candid about her and Spiegel's relationship with Bloom and Perry (who sweetly got engaged on Valentine's Day 2019), sharing on "The Drew Barrymore Show" in 2020, "We all really respect one another. When it comes to special occasions, when we have to be together, we work it out so we have compromises [about] what is the best for our whole family." Speaking seven years after her and Bloom's high-profile split, she added, "We really do always think of what is the best thing for Flynn, and I just think that's the most important thing." Kerr echoed that on "Moments with Candace Parker" the following year, sharing she spends a lot of time with her ex and their son on special occasions. "We celebrate all the important milestones together," she said, likening her relationship with her ex to having "an annoying brother."
She also spoke to Vogue Australia in 2022 about how important it's always been for her and Bloom to be friendly. "From day one when Orlando and I decided to separate, I said, 'Listen, whatever we do, we have to put Flynn's needs first, not our own,'" she said. And they certainly do.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette
Courteney Cox filed for divorce from David Arquette in 2012 after 13 years of marriage. Though the split was tough for the former couple and their daughter, Coco (who was just about to turn 8 when Cox filed), they remained close even during their breakup. "He's my favorite person in the world. He's my best friend. No matter what happens in our future, he's my very best friend," she told People the year of their divorce.
Cox proved their healthy, platonic relationship had longevity too, as she doubled down on her comments on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" the following year (via Us Weekly). "He's my best friend in the world. I love him," she said. "I appreciate David more now than I ever did ... I don't recommend divorce in general, but he is my best friend and we've both grown and changed, and I think we both appreciate each other more," she added.
Cox and Arquette's secret to a successful post-divorce relationship? Respect. Arquette told Us Weekly how he felt about their friendship in 2019, sharing, "[Cox and I] have always just made [Coco] the number one priority. We have respect and love for each other and just [are] on the same page."
Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet
When Lenny Kravitz divorced Lisa Bonet in 1993 after two years of marriage, the musician couldn't hide his heartbreak. "That woman inspired me so much. It was a magical time that she and I shared," he told Rolling Stone two years after their divorce. "I was in a tremendous amount of pain when we broke up, tremendous," he added, sharing he struggled to sleep properly for months. But the two found a way to have a healthy relationship after gaining some distance from their breakup and worked together to co-parent their daughter, Zoë Kravitz.
"Zoë's mom and I now are best friends. When we're all together now — her man, her kids, Zoë, me — we're all together and we're one big, happy family," the "Fly Away" hitmaker said on "Oprah's Master Class" two decades later (via HuffPost). "It's beautiful and it just shows you what can be done," he added. Then, in 2019, Kravitz shared they'd gotten to the point where their relationship felt more like siblings. "We're like brother and sister. After Lisa and I separated, we learned to find a new relationship," he told People. And the friendly exes have been spotted at various events together, with Bonet even attending Kravitz's 60th birthday party in 2024.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were married for a decade before undergoing their "conscious uncoupling," announced on Goop. The duo, who share two children, remained close after their marriage ended, so much so the "Shallow Hal" star has likened their post-split relationship to that of siblings more than once. "He's really like my brother. We're very familial. It's nice, it's great," Paltrow, who had an epic post-divorce glow-up, said on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in 2018. That was still true three years later on "Shop Today with Jill Martin," when Paltrow said, "He's like my brother. You know, he's my family." Paltrow continued, "I'm so grateful to him for giving me these kids. It worked out well ... It really did, I have to say."
Paltrow and Martin's relationship became so strong the Coldplay frontman even joined his former wife and her new husband, Brad Falchuck, on their 2019 Maldives honeymoon. "My new husband and his children, my children, my ex-husband, our best family friends [attended]. It was a very modern honeymoon," she said on the show then known as "Live with Kelly and Ryan," surprising hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest. "Your ex-husband went on your honeymoon?" the former "All My Children" star asked. "I mean, yeah, pretty much," Paltrow responded. Though we wouldn't necessarily recommend bringing an ex along on an important vacation with a new partner, we love to see a former couple who are on such good terms.
Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson
Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson prove you don't need kids to stay close post-divorce. The pair were together over 20 years when they split in 1999, with Drescher telling In Touch they tied the knot as teenagers. "Peter and I met when we were 15. We were just kids and didn't know who we truly were. We went through a lot together," she said. But neither harbored negative feelings for each other after calling it quits. "The Nanny" star shared that they're "the best of friends. We love each other dearly," even revealing she and her ex-husband had set one another up on dates — a unique method of getting back into dating after a divorce. "Peter and I feel so blessed to have met each other and to still have a caring, loving relationship. Love is what we're all about," she added. Drescher remained supportive when Jacobson came out as gay.
The amicable exes worked together too, developing the TV Land sitcom "Happily Divorced." Drescher told TV Land during a joint interview with Jacobson that the series was inspired by their marriage, divorce, and subsequent friendship. She quipped, "He gets moody or cranky or controlling and those were all elements of our marriage, it was on the demise. But now it's like, we're divorced so I'm free to say no, no, no, no!" The twosome are so close they've walked the red carpet at several events together, including the 2025 SAG Awards.
